Buying an XTRAIL

Wife and I are looking at a one owner 2004 petrol XTRAIL with 123k on it automatic for 12k at the local dealer. From what I have read on here the short time I have been looking it appears the little beast will tow a 14ft van with an ATM of 1290.

I am a bit nervous of taking the step as I wondered if it is capable of doing this.We won't be travelling heaps of miles...maybe 3-4 hours from home at the most. Can't see us going around Australia but would like to go to Ballina occasionally and Hervey Bay.

Please let me know what you think...we loved test driving the XTRAIL yesterday and the wife really likes it.

Re:

That price is way too high mate, even if it's in mint condition.

Check The Redbook for more upto date prices on the older T30 models.

For that kind of money you'd be able to get a T31

Re:

Not too sure about your budget, but if you can, get yourself a Diesel. More power, better at towing and way better fuel economy. You won't be disappointed.

Re:

I have a 2.5 petrol auto 2010 model.
I tow a 1200kg boat around.
I have not been on a long journey yet (Xmas time), but so far up hill and dale it seems to handle the work without complaint.
It does kick down a few "gears?" going uphill, but unless you are in a real hurry, its no real burden.
I generally pass trucks up most steep hills without any problem.

As for fuel consumption.
I generally get about 9.2 l/100k overall, but that does go up a bit with the boat on the back, as you would expect.
But I have had many cars and I dont think you could find a better small SUV that could pull 1200 kgs as comfortably.

Just be aware
The caravan will be about 1200kgs, then there is your gear in the caravan.
If you are like me you will also carry some stuff in the car and perhaps water or sewerage in the tanks of the trailer.
Added up you may well be carrying upward of 1700-1800 kgs.
The diesel has a lower towing capacity than the 2.5 petrol which is 2000kg.

Just something to think about

Re:

My Diesel manual easily achieves 7.2lt per100km at 100kmh/ with the air con on.

I haven't really towed more than a box trailer on the farm picking up firewood, but based on my experiences with several petrol models, I'll bet my left leg that towing is where the diesel will absolutely smash the petrol on fuel economy with the identical trailer being towed.

If you are towing, a diesel is by far the better option than a petrol.
