RETUNING A STOCK DETUNED T31

Hi All,

I've read about how Nissan From January 2006"detuned" the T30 and the T31 to 123 kW from the previous T30/132 kw spec to meet emission standards.

Can anyone answer these Q's for me (in respect of the Petrol 2.5 engine):

1. In what ways was the engine detuned? (I did read something about exhaust impediment and ECU mapping).

2. Can these changes be reversed in a T31 i.e. retuned? (I'm sure its not that simple if Nissan made changes to cam and valve specs)

3. If its possible, would increasing the Kw cause prolems with transmission/clutch? (I've read how some models were detuned to reduce transmission stress, but I think that was diesel after 2007)

thanks

Re: RETUNING A STOCK DETUNED T31

Emissions testing relates to emissions for the model year of manufacture for the vehicle, not just a specific vehicle make so you must keep emissions for your T31 compliant with those in force at the date of manufacture.

If you do manage to undo the "detune" on the T31, your emissions will be the same as those for the T30 and you will fail your next registration because they will be too high for the T31. Chances are you will also start getting MIL indications due to the 2nd exhaust oxygen sensor reading incorrect values. Nobody has been able to crack the Nissan ECU programing and the option of remapping the ECU of the T31 with the T30 program will not work because the T31, along with the Series II T30 had a much different setup with the CANBUS controlling many more devices so the sensor signals may not be compatible.

Your best option is to replace the exhaust with either a cat-back or full exhaust upgrade which has been designed for both emissions compliance and increased power through higher flow.

Re: RETUNING A STOCK DETUNED T31

Thanks Kev...for the concise answer ...makes sense.

To save me pouring over the posts all over again, what's your conservative estimate of the KW's to be gained by

1. the 'cat-back' upgrade
2. 'full exhaust upgrade'
3. Aftermarket air intake

and if you have experience could you estimate a rough (a) parts price plus (b) labour time for each of the above.

By the way...I road tested a few T30's (petrols) autos....2003-2004. They made my much newer low KLM 2007 T31 look much less responsive. I really did prefer the performance of those T30's.

thanks bud.

Re: RETUNING A STOCK DETUNED T31

Here are the relevant sections of the forum you may like to read.
They all refer to a Series I T30 but the proportionate gains should be similar but the costs would have to be factored to today's with inflation.

1. Cat-Back Exhaust
Information
Cost can be obtained from the Online Shop or you can enquire at any muffler place for a custom-built system of there own.

2. Full Exhaust Upgrade
You might have to enquire at the Online Shop for the T31 full system as I don't think one has been done yet.

3. Cold Air Intake
Install instructions
Price at the time

Re:

For my T31, I got a quote of $849 for an ecu remap from Peter at PJT in Sydney (www.superchips.com.au) Takes 3-4hrs, he comes to you and will give anywhere from 10-15% power increase, biggest benefit is from low to medium rpm. Completely pointless of course if you do not already have an upgraded intake and exhaust.

Re:

Drew,

The piggy back ECU thread can be found HERE.

As far as I know re-mapping of the OBDII type Nissan ECU for the X-Trail Petrol (diesel chips do exist) has not been done by anyone as yet (or they would be filthy rich), as none of them could crack the Nissan X-trail ECU coding to actually re-map it, hence why the piggy back ECU method is used instead. If this has changed, it is welcome news indeed.

In any case, this would be the last step to do and you could easily claim back the lost 9KW of power doing much simpler mods like Kev has correctly suggested.

Please use the Site Search feature to locate existing topics and feel free to ask follow-up questions in the existing threads.

Re:

Contacted Peter at Superchips and as suspected, they can only adjust the mapping of the diesel X-Trail ECU which other chips on the market can do as well. They don't even know the type of ECU used in our Petrol xtrails even after I told him it is OBDII type.

Understandable that he may have forgotten, considering the conversation that passed between us was clearly the only one he'd ever had regarding xtrails, and as I haven't followed through with the project it would've quickly become an irrelevant one. Had one further phone call after the last email regarding extra potential power increase if the intake and exhaust were better than stock. I've not spoken to him since.

Re:

When I sent them an email enquiry through the online form on their website, I clearly mentioned the model of my xtrail being T31 Petrol with a QR25DE engine, yet Peter responded with all the information about remapping a diesel xtrail and when I responded to him saying that mine is petrol, he quickly asked for exactly the same thing like in your communication with him.....a photo of the ECU!

This is despite me clearly telling him that the ECU is a Bosch OBDII type, so it shouldn't be a surprise for him.

It is also strange that the price variation between February and June can be so vast, as I was quoted $1,249 (including GST) and the same story line of him being in Sydney in a week or so and he'll be coming from Brisbane...blah, blah, blah

In any case, there is only one way to find out for sure emoticon
