Interior lights LED upgrade

I recently replaced my 3 x roof lights and 2 x step lights with LEDs.
The process was pain-free and I'm generally happy with the results.

While driving at night, I noticed a very soft glow from the map-light.
It was barely noticable and certainly not enough to disturb driving.

Later, I checked it out properly and found the following:
Apart from the "glow", everything worked fine.
All of the LEDS had the same glow, regardless of headlights or other conditions.
It could be stopped on individual lights by switching from DOOR to OFF.
No switch effected any OTHER light.
The step lights have no switch, so they glow whenever the doors are closed.

With all the light ON, the circuit was pulling 0.9A.
With the door freshly closed, it went down to 0.7A. (no timer on the luggage light)
When the timer kicks in, all the lights glow and it's still pulling 0.25A.
I haven't yet tested it with the incandescent bulbs back in.

This doesn't sound like much, but the car is parked-up for long periods, when I have the company car.

It's obvious (in MY head) that there's an earth leak in the wiring, timer or door switches.
Without wanting to pull it all down, I was hoping someone else might have a clue.

Cheers
Bruce

Re: Interior lights LED upgrade

The interior lights are controlled by the Body Control Module according to "Request for light" condition of various door switches etc and also the Door lock/unlock function of the key.

As the output to the lights is from some logic digital circuit in the BCM it may be susceptible to load resistance and/or CANBus compatibility.

You probably have NO fault or short anywhere.

Where did you measure the 0.25Amps?

Remember, the door switches don't supply 12 volts to the lights; they tell a computer that light is required and the BCM supplies the 12 volts via its solid state circuitry.

If the battery never went flat before then it probably won't now.

If others have had no problem with fitting LED lights to a T30 model then don't worry too much.

Re: Interior lights LED upgrade

All digital circuits and transistor outputs have a leakage component which is enough to slightly illuminate some LED light modules.

The way to fix this is to have a resistor soldered across the LED module to shunt the current and the LED module will not be illuminated when the circuit is off.
Otherwise you will need one of the lamps in the circuit to still use a standard incandescent bulb to give the extra resistance.

Interesting point. I recently got an alarm installed and was too cheap to get the canbus compatible model because I read somewhere that the 2006 canbus ain't the sharpest tool in the shed and doesn't look at "trivial" lights. I wonder if there's an error for that.

I pulled the fuse and plugged in a protected ammeter.

I only got the exy recently and haven't deserted it for long, because I've been on leave. I'll know for sure when I finish my next 101 hour shift. Flat bats aren't rare at work and it won't be a biggy.
Very rough maths here, but 0.25A on a 50AH battery is 200hrs until it's a black hole. Include the alarm and it'll be lucky to crank.
It sound geeky, but I was considering installing a flexible solar panel under the sun-roof. Anyone ever done that?

Yes, but the glow isn't the issue. It's the current.
I've got a dash-cam behind the mirror which feeds off the lighting circuit. (which wasn't installed during testing) It works off USB current, so it isn't much, but I wanted to be safe.
A shunt resistor would increase the current, but you've given me a damn good idea.
A series resistor may do the trick. The LED drivers should maintain correct current when they're switched on.

Thanks for the brain cells.
Cheers
Bruce

Re: Interior lights LED upgrade

After four days idle, I saw that the glow is gone and I'm thinking this is it.
I openned the door and everything lit up fine and the car started.
When I shut the door, the dull glow started again, so I kept an eye on it.
15min later it was VERY dull and 30min after that, it had gone completely.
It seems there might be no problem at all and a capacitor is just doing it's thing.

The big test will be tomorrow night, when I go home.
I'm betting that it was all paranoid delusions.

Cheers
Bruce

There you go - it's the fade out function of the BCM which is specified in the manual as a straight line fade out after a certain number of seconds; controlled digitally. Interesting that the voltage doesn't go to zero in a shorter time. Must have been designed for incandescent bulbs!

Excellent detective work.

Re:

I forum searched for this because I just this weekend gone switched all 3 roof lights and both door lights to LED.

Cant tell if the door ones stay on because they are hidden down by the seats but my Front and Middle roof lights have a slight glow when driving or with the car parked unless each Individual switch is set to OFF.

With them on DOOR setting I have a faint glow in them that does not go out even when I stop and lock the car.

Re:

The faint glow is normal for LED lights without resistors. They will go out in time. Nothing to worry about.

Hi Guys,

sorry to raise an old thread from the dead!

What LED's are you using to replace the standard bulbs?

I'm looking at replacing all of the interiors in my t31.

Re: Interior lights LED upgrade

I just measured all mine in order to look for replacements and they appear to be 31mm festoon bulbs. That's for the map, ceiling, boot, and tailgate lights. Mine doesn't have door lights so I dunno about those.
I haven't decided on what to replace them with yet though, so any recommendations would be good emoticon
