posticon Door Issue

Hi everyone,

I bought a brand new 2013 T31 recently from Springwood Nissan in Brisbane. When we went on test drive my wife noticed passenger door wasn't closing properly. All three door close properly except front passenger door. It never closes in first go. You'd have to bash the door to close it. But its annoying closing from inside as you'd have to literally pull the door hard to close and its not easy to do being a passenger sitting inside the car.

We have been told that it will be fixed before delivery. It wasn't. Couldn't back off from purchase for such small reason as we have been assured that it will be looked after by service team at 1000km check. Sales person made a note to the service department to fix the door.

Went for 1000kms check and service department has no information about the faulty door. Nevertheless I complained about the issue. Service person told the door lock might be out of alignment and will adjust that. After service, no change. All I found was the door lock was greased up and thats all.

Doesn't makes sense, looked up closely around the door sil, rubber trim, rubber stop protectors and couldn't work out. No issues with any other doors. They close with gentle push. Really hate bashing door on a brand new car. I have a feeling it could be a bad rubber seal around the door or faulty lock.

I was called by Nissan to ask about the experience I had with purchase and service and I reported this. I was transferred to the sales person immediately. Sales person told he was busy with another customer and he will call back in 30mins. I never got the call back.

Can someone suggest what options do I have to get this fixed. Don't want to waste my time and money replacing things myself like door seal or lock assembly and then find that the door itself is not aligned.

Not all happy with this. Wife is getting annoyed. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Yogi

Re:

Sounds like the door rubbers are still firm, they can be for a while. You can try some rubber softner or a bit of good old vaseline.
Check that there are no obstacles stopping the door from closing, have a look around the edges of the inner door and the rubbers for any unusual marks form sticking or binding.

I have to pull mine on my new T31 pretty firmly. Often I miss it first, sometimes second go. But I find its just the vacuum pressure of all the seals causing this. If I have a window open they all close real easy first go.
Im sorta glad they close like this as it shows me the seals are all really good and dust wont come in on a bad road. Had a Rav4 before this and mate was that thing a dust bucket, had to vacuum it out every second week. Have you seen what happens if you have a window open?

Yes Jon. You are right. I found this after a bit of investigation.

I wanted to eliminate rubber seal being new and stopping the door from closing. So, I removed rubber seal around the door, undid door hinge and took the rubber seal out. No change. Disappointed and put the rubber seal back onto the door.

Then, I tried closing door in different ways to figure out what exactly is stoping it. One of which when the door closed partially after closing it, I tried pushing the door to lock and I felt the pressure inside the car pushing tailgate door and I to hear it properly I opened rear door. Then when I closed faulty door leaving rear door open, it closed perfectly with a gentle push. Just to confirm its the air pressure inside the car thats stopping the door from closing with a gentle push, I tired closing leaving one of the other doors open. It worked.

What surprised me though is if its the air pressure that was stopping then when I took the rubber seal out it should have closed with no dramas. Also, if it really is the air pressure or vacuum that is stopping the door from closing properly, it should happen with all the doors. Not just with front passenger door. What ever it is am not happy the way it is. All door should be the same. I will have to take time out during weekdays and take it to the service department and update them about the cause and see what they have to say.

Re:

Yeah mate in know what you mean sort of. My two back passenger doors close easier than the two front ones, with a gentle push like you say, with all the windows up. But both front are harder. If I close the front ones from standing outside the car I can actually see the roof flex from the pressure, but not so from the two rear! It is weird the difference! Makes me wonder if there is some kind of pressure release with the back ones that is not occurring with the front. Im actually taking my X in today for a warranty issue fix. Its a pain when you've only done 5000ks but it seems that most cars these days have some issues that need/get sorted in the early days, all makes, my neighbour had his brand new Commodore in for something after just his second week. Ill ask the guys when I go in today if they know anything about the door closing thing and let you know if they know why.
Good luck mate.

Re: Door Issue

Both my daughter and I bought new 2013 X-trails late last year. BOTH cars had the same problem, as you describe.
Rather than leave it to an apprentice at the first service, I loosened the front passenger-side locks (marking their original position with crayon, as a fall-back) moved them 1.5mm outwards and bingo, no more closing problems.
Yep, both doors were simply out of alignment. That simple.

Re:

Yeah that was what the guy I asked about the problem said to me today BP. He said that it just might be a touch out of alignment with where it should be. Said too that there are two pressure relief valves, rubber flaps, that release the pressure when closing the doors that are somewhere near the, behind, the rear bumper. But said they never get stuck or anything and doesn't explain why only 1 door would do it. Said it would more than likely be the one on the body inside the door that would be the prob., the one you mentioned.

@BPxtrail

I didn't know that the locks are adjustable. Would you be able to post a photo of the adjustment you have done.

@Mulga

Thanks mate. Believe or not its just one door. Its common to have air pressure inside but not so much that it will restrict a door from closing, especially one particular door. I think the culprit could be the lock alignment. I will go have a look today and see if thats what it is.

Re: Door Issue

I don't think that a photo will really show you anything - all you need do is loosen the latch located on the B pillar, move it towards the outside of the car by circa 2mm and tighten it down again. Check by gently closing the door.
As I mentioned in my previous post, I outlined the old location of the latch with crayon, not only as a fall-back, but to also ensure that I did not lift the latch vertically.

Re: Door Issue

Just tried. No luck. Nothing has changed. I even tried adjusting latch vertically. Looks like I will have to deal this with Nissan.
