Trip to the Vic high country

Well, I've had my XTrail for 6 months now, and it has over 12,000 k's on the clock, so I have decided it is high time to get it dirty.

A load of blokes from work are heading up to the Vic High country for some camping and some off roading. We are going to be camping on the Sheepyard Flat on Fri/Sat night and taking trips out to Craig's hut, Bindaree falls and the Pineapple flat.

The mild mannered of the bunch will be sticking to the made up 'Circuit Road' But I want to give the Clear hills and the The Monument track a go.

A few are going to be in an assortment of jacked up Toyota hilux with snorkels and serious tyres.

I am going along to show that you don't need all the gear, you just need to have the right idea.

I'm sure the Xtrail will hold its own against some fierce competition. Will post pics to prove it.

If you are in the area, come along and give me a tow out of some muddy puddle I get stuck in.

Clear hills track up to Craigs hut is no problem for the xtrail, Monument track would be rougher, depends on conditions, with spring lift and all terrains with a bit of care it is achievable.

Re:

Well, I made it, impressed a true Hardcore Bogan in his jacked up Hilux. I attempted without fear or hesitation stuff that another one in our group in his Prado was too timid to attempt.

We camped at Fry's flat and made an early start to make it up to Craigs hut. We followed the Circuit road around to the base of the Craigs hut track. That was the first point when I thought I might miss the Low Range box. But with the gutsy Diesel and a manual gearbox, not a problem.

Stunning scenery and bagged another Geocache whilst up there.

I bottled it on taking the Clear hills and Monument track down towards the Bindaree falls junction. I shouldn't have done, someone else in our group in a Ford Escape managed it rightly.

After a group photo under the falls it was decided to head to Pineapple Flat. Now, freshly emboldened by finding that the Escape managed the Monument track, I decided to take the direct route to pineapple flat. The aforementioned hilux-bogan and the Escape took the King Basin Road along the bottom of the valley. this had a good half dozen river crossings and a quite severe (for the X Trail) boulder field to traverse. Only once did the side steps touch down, and I was very aware that I haven't got my hands on one of Jalals underbody bash plates yet. So took it very easily and picked my route like a I was crossing a minefield.

After we all met up in Pineapple flat the lead bogan sneakily lead the whole group back along the King Basin track again in the other direction so I got to do it all a second time.

On the way back to the campsite at Fry's flat, we needed to due a firewood replen so we took Doughty's Road up towards Mt Timbertop. This road has had lots of drainage ditches dug across it and a big mound built up beside the trench. the XTrail only 'rubbed' her side steps on the crest and never got close to digging her nose in unless I took them a bit too fast.

Chilled out around a roaring campfire and a drink or two was taken.

Early up the next morning with a crisp frost on the ground to cook a hearty bacon-beans-fried egg and bread combo which led to the inevitable pack up.

I wasn't in a rush and took my time, so I was the last one to leave the campsite at about 09:30.

I took a meandering trek back home and stopped off to explore Murchieson gap and Strath creek falls. There are quite a lot of easy tracks to explore around here and a very well equipped campsite which will need further exploration at a later date.
