My LED bulbs have an aluminium base and fit perfectly fine in bikes and cars.nondisclosed_email@example.com (jalalski)Wed, 08 Jul 2015 07:24:42 +0000 Re: Headlights and high beamhttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2088231,from=rss#post2088231https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2088231,from=rss#post2088231I did the same thing Jalal...installed the H4 adapter plate with the clip then tried inserting the bulb, but the 11mm space between the plate and the bulb housing when assembled was not enough for the 14mm height of the clip. The clip itself was physically rubbing on the bulb housing and stopped it from being pushed in far enough to lock into the H4 adapter plate. Maybe you were lucky enough to have a different style of clip on your bike headlamp compared to my T30 Xtrail headlamps. Yes LED are a better option than HID especially since HID conversions are illegal on standard halogen-designed headlights without washers or levelling devices. At this point there are no such restrictions on LED conversions.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Revhead Kev)Tue, 07 Jul 2015 23:06:11 +0000 Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2088226,from=rss#post2088226https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2088226,from=rss#post2088226Hi Kev, Interestingly enough the LED H4 bulbs I fitted in my bike (and I have 2 of them in my headlights) also puzzled me as to how I can flick the retaining clip over the LED bulb body without causing any damage to the clip itself. It turns out that the correct way to install the LED bulb is to slide it out of its base, install the bulb base in the headlight housing, secure the base with the retaining clip and only then insert the LED bulb itself. As to the rubber boot, what I did is reversed it on itself and fitted it over the bulb leaving enough room for the fan to breath. As am not doing any off-roading in my bike, water ingress is not an issue but yes, there are newer LED bulbs on the market which don't have the fan and these are better and much more expensive too. For the price, the 2 LED bulbs I fitted on my bike are super bright and would put the halogen bulbs I had to shame for sure. Night riding is so much clearer it's amazing. I think they are certainly a better option than many HID bulbs out there.nondisclosed_email@example.com (jalalski)Tue, 07 Jul 2015 17:13:25 +0000 Re: Headlights and high beamhttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2088225,from=rss#post2088225https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2088225,from=rss#post2088225Just a warning about LED globes. I have tried a different pair and had the following problems... - The spring clip may be too big and interfere with the lamp body stopping it from being completely pushed in to lock with the H4 adapter plate. I had to bend mine to flatten them out. - Our waterproof rubber boot for the headlamp is so deep that it completely encloses the cooling fins of the base which would impede airflow and cause possible overheating of the LED. - As we can often cross creeks where the water may rise sufficiently high enough to reach the headlamps, an LED headlamp without a fan (IP68) would be better than a design including a fan to minimise the chance of water ingress causing damage. The unit I tried was rated at 2800 lumens Lowbeam and 3200 lumens Highbeam and I did not find them much brighter than my 7 year old halogens. I don't think the technology is quite there yet but I would welcome anyone to show me a set installed for me to see in operation.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Revhead Kev)Tue, 07 Jul 2015 16:16:26 +0000 Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2088222,from=rss#post2088222https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2088222,from=rss#post2088222Hi Anthony, There is no ADR ruling for anything regarding LED bulbs. These are H1 for high beam and H11 for low. I replaced both high and low with Philips Crystal Vision 4300K globes, and while I love the clear white colour, they're not spectacularly brighter than the stock globes. I think a lot of the problem is the aiming of the lights. For starters, make sure the headlight aiming control is at the highest setting. This is the little rolly switch thing down and right of the steering wheel, where the ESP button is. When I first picked up my car I had no idea you could adjust them with the switch and wondered why the lights were pointing so low. Secondly, you can adjust the aim of the whole headlight housing using screws on the back. THIS POST has instructions on how to do this. I just recently adjusted mine up a bit, and it made a huge difference. I did some test drive-bys with someone in another car to make sure they're not blinding for other drivers.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Dark Morelia)Fri, 05 Sep 2014 19:56:54 +0000 Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2084967,from=rss#post2084967https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2084967,from=rss#post2084967Take one of your globes out Gail and take it with you to Supercheap Auto. This was brought about by turkeys fitting LED fog lights WTF as if you need more power in fog! I'll admit to running them all the time daylight as well I run the low beam as well during the day to increase viability, but I have adjusted them to their lowest setting, so they don't throw far and just fill in in front a bit, I will turn them off in the rain when on two lane bi directional roads though for the reason you stated, they glare off the road and annoy/blind oncoming motorists. I am looking for 2700K globes for them now, Very Yellow IPF make them but so far I cant get a hold of them, so that this will be reduced because I was in very heavy fog the other night and they were practically useless with the factory colour temp. If I cant get the correct temp I'll be fitting either a yellow or orange film over them. Anyhow I'm still looking for the IPFs and will fit them in preference to film. The other night I hasd a whole row of cars (I counted 9) in a row all with their "look at me lights" on. With the rain I could barely make out the road from the reflection of so many lights. HID's: Heading Into Disaster, is my term for them, unless fitted to a projector type lamp they will always dazzle oncoming drivers, even when fitted to them they still DO NOT WORK CORRECTLY. As Jalal has very correctly stated, they need to be constantly aimed correctly, so a self leveling unit is a must. And washers are included into the system as dust on the lens will cause the emitted light to suffer from diffraction, and break into a blinding haze that the driver can only just detect but all oncoming drivers will hate you for. This also apples to normal types of headlights as well, it's just that at the colour temps of HID's and their output intensity, it becomes noticeable much earlier. I am sick of being blinded by know it all Wa@#ers, who think they personally know better than a group of Highly Educated and Industry Trained Engineers who spent years developing a cars lighting systems. Yes improvements can be made to standard manufacturers offerings, but retro fitting of HID's is not the answer. It is currently under review as to whether or not these units will continue to be able to be imported into Australia for road use. If the review finds that they are to be banned, hefty fines will be enforced for anyone found illegally importing them, even privately, and anyone found still using them, will also face fines. It is already being suggested that all Police vehicles Australia wide be fitted with equipment (that is rather cheap) that can detect illegal colour temps and the use of illegally aimed lights and the use of HID's in the wrong enclosure. Hey my eyes and I would say most Police Officers eyes are capable of that, it is just another enforcement tool, and I say bring it on.     I have a relative in the Auto Electrical Wholesale supply business, Lighting is his specialty, and we were talking today about it, he no longer imports HID's as he was advised by his legal team, that in supplying them he could be held liable for damages, if they were found to be a contributing factor in an accident. These were making up a pretty good portion of his business, he was supplying Phillips ones, so quality German manufactured ADR compliant units, not cheapo Chinese made units. So I then asked him a few more questions, Narva, IPF & Hella will no longer supply him with globes above 65 Watts. Hella has already withdrawn all stock above 65 Watts from major outlets, you may still find some in servos, but they will be tracked down shortly too, and removed, again this is a legality issue. Yes you can still get up to 110 watters from Hella, but only after you provide them with a CURRENT CAMS License, and sign a disclaimer stating that they will only ever be used in "SANCTIONED OFF-ROAD COMPETITION". So they are taking this issue seriously, Narva will be following suit soon and IPF have started withdrawing products from the Australian Market already. Enough of that, what can we do. Right, in H4 globes there are some very good replacements available, I personally recommend and Use IPF FATBOYS, in the original Augustus, awesome globes well suited to the application, very user friendly, Designed for use with spotlights, so LEGALLY 65 watts on low beam and 55 watts on high beam, reinforced filaments for use on shocking roads, a colour temp that will not blind oncoming drivers and will pick up animal eyes very easily, 7000K colour temp lamps will not reflect as much light from animal retinas from certain angles, and are so bright the animal will involuntarily close it's eyes, so well, now you see them, now you don't. Take a flash photo of your dogs eyes from different angles if you don't believe me, Photography flashes are usually between 6000K and 7000K, (I am a Professional Photographer, so this is my ballpark, I know what I'm talking about here, when it comes to the dreaded RED EYE) Now get an old low K value torch, not an LED one, and shine it in poor old rovers eyes, from almost any angle you will get some eye shine, now take an LED on with a high K (Kelvin) value and it pretty much only generates Eye Shine "RED EYE" in animals from straight in front. I was also a Feral Camel shooter at one time, best results were always achieved with low K temp spotlights, brighter is not always better! On the new Augustus V 2.0 I have fitted Phillips 100% H1 & H11 globes, I am still undecided as to what to fit in the H8 Fog Lamps. I am very impressed by these Globes and Autobahn currently has them at 1/2 price so get them while they last. This is under cost by the way, they are massively overstocked and have to move them. Nice colour temp, awesome amount of extra light and reach on high beam and a pretty decent boost on the low beam too. I took before and after photos and will post them soon. I used the exact same settings for both photo shoots, so no camera trickery. They pick up reflectors heaps better and the same for animal eyes. Now LED Light Bars and Spot/Flood Lamps. There are no available ADR compliant LED Light bars on the market, NONE, ZIP, NADA, they are all illegal, even if fitted and not connected, and cannot be used on Australian roads, full stop! Now LED Spot/Floods, there is ONLY ONE, repeat only one available ADR compliant brand available, and that is the ARB LED intensity Flood/Spots. The Minister of Finance in our household was not convinced until that point that they were worth the price tag, she now recommends them, NUFF SAID! So My 2 cents worth and then a bit, but believe me if you hit me with illegally aimed lights or incorrectly fitted HID's, you'll cop a very quick flash of the ultimate legal set up, that will make you rethink your problem lights! Happy Snappin' Darren J Callesen, AKA Augustus the X Trails Dad PS I'm also very annoyed at the number of people getting around with only one head light working, even spotted an RACV tow truck tonight with one headlight out! So at Supercheap Auto Narva have replacement bulbs that state brighter whiter light compared to the yellow sad looking lights I currently have. These light globes are priced between $60-$80 depending on the intensity one wishes to achieve. Does anyone have any opinions on these particular globes? These bulbs are ADR approved too. I believe HIDs are legal to some extent (especially as new cars have them pre-installed), while LEDs are illegal and are intended for "off-road" use only. Lastly, I don't want my lights to be too bright like some of those jerks that come towards me at night in the opposite direction when they're using low beam and I can't see the road ahead of me. I have Osram Nightbreaker bulbs in mine (just for low beam), and they make quite a difference over the standard bulbs.
