Beerburrum Photos My (gentle) recovery was also from the rear tie-down point as there was apparently no way to secure the snatch strap to the towbar...even with the bits in the recovery kit I bought the day before. There was no traction to go either forward or aft. The tow-out was discussed at the time with due regard to the video of the arse being ripped off an X-Trail by a wire rope used as a snatch strap. After a simple attempt from the forward towpoint, to go forward was found to be more perilous than going backward as the front was hard against the high and solid forward rise and there was NO chance of dragging it over that hump without inflicting damage to the front bumper and radiator system. The towbar was the first choice as the only exposed part of the car and it had a tow hitch designed for the purpose.  Unfortunately it did not fit the bow shackles of the snatch strap. After due debate and a considered group opinion, it was decided that the standard tow point should take the expected punishment from the straight pull. That straight pull didn't work so after more debate, a light 'snatch' was used. Fortunately, that did work and there was no damage. There were not too many options available - it was a pretty solid bog. So go for the points of least resistance. It all worked out with no fuss & no damage so that is a good thing. I didn't think that the trip was even that dramatic as my car didn't even get dirty. The camera was still running in my car. So this is the 'recovery ' video. I backed up to give space for the recovery, so it is from a distance. The sound of panting is not of me practicing for late night phone calls - it is that of my dog leaning forward to see what is happening...Like me, he likes to know what is going on. click on this for another Photobucket video.. nondisclosed_email@example.com (DogTrail)Thu, 17 Apr 2014 20:28:47 +0000 Re: Beerburrum run 13 April 2014https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2082559,from=rss#post2082559https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2082559,from=rss#post2082559quote:Toddyh03 wrote: First I saw a pic of the car being snatched forwards with the front wheels were on almost full lock. This makes it much harder for the recovery vehicle, increases the risk of damaging the snatch strap and makes the recovery harder to control. Todd, the reason the wheels were at full lock was to attempt to get in up on the rise and out of the grooves as it was full bog in front. It did not work of course so we kept going forward but the hole was too deep to pull the car out without ripping the whole front end off. Then we went out the back to tow out backwards. quote: The 2nd thing I saw with the same vehicle was it being recovered backwards from the rear tie down point. I can't even begin to tell you how dangerous this is. I agree that this point is the least desirable point of towing out backward and all attempts were made firstly to get a strap on the towbar but with the tow hitch locked in and buried and unable to be gotten out, this was the only option available. I attempted to do a straight tow out to reduce the strain on this point but the vehicle would not move. When we did the snatch, it was only a light one and was enough to get the car loose and drag it out. We discussed the options together and made a decision based on what was felt to be the best on the day. Given another option, this point would not have been used for sure. Luckily, I believe no damage was done to the vehicle aside from a few minor scratches. The back bumper that you see ripped was already done from a previous trip. nondisclosed_email@example.com (BlackThunda)Thu, 17 Apr 2014 17:43:47 +0000 Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2082558,from=rss#post2082558https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2082558,from=rss#post2082558Nice to see the Xtrails out enjoying themselves.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Strez)Thu, 17 Apr 2014 14:18:45 +0000 Re: Beerburrum run 13 April 2014https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2082548,from=rss#post2082548https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2082548,from=rss#post2082548Corrected link for Tracy's pics herenondisclosed_email@example.com (Revhead Kev)Thu, 17 Apr 2014 10:50:13 +0000 Re: Beerburrum run 13 April 2014https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2082544,from=rss#post2082544https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2082544,from=rss#post2082544Hi Guys Sorry for the delay in posting a trip report. Between school holidays & being off colour it’s been a big couple of days. Thank you Dogtail for starting the post, video and Blackthunda for posting some pics Well for a run we only gave a week’s notice for, we had a good turnout with the following attending: TraceyC - Lead Car & Organiser Dogtail BlackThunda – tail end charlie Mfeodoroff VickieG The day was pretty wet with lots of activity from 4WD’s and trail bikes I don’t think I’ve seen that many out before. It must have been all the mud that had them out in droves. It was a very eventful day we all meet at McDonalds as planned and just after leaving it started to rain which sorta indicated what sort of day we were up for. To heavy by any means but a constant drizzle. In the most part the tracks were pretty good considering the rain the area had received overnight. We did a small hill off the main track then headed up to the lookout for morning tea. Poor Blackthunda had to call RACQ for the Pajero when it refused to start and RACQ couldn’t find us and ended up in the wrong lookout, the problem resolved itself but later on I did wonder if this was a sign that we should have called it quits due to the weather etc. But we soldiered on. We started down the powerline track and everything was going fine till we hit the creak crossing. We made it through fine but for Dave an experienced driver he found it challenging. It was at this point I think we may have had a problem with the radios. Dave wanted to find an optimal route for everyone, but we ended up with others following on behind and then the fun started. Mfeodoroff said he almost when sideways but made it up to a point and poor VickieG ended up stuck. Due to the depth of the xtrail + mud etc they were limited on how to do the recovery but she made it out. Then poor Mfeodoroff also needed a recovery when we made the decision to turn around. We had a couple of other 4WD’s waiting for us to get past and they were nice enough to help out with the recovery. Unfortunately the cowboys in the jacked up 4WD’s ended up in a very bad way from what we could see so it wasn’t just us needing assistance with recoveries on the day. So we headed back to the lookout out for some lunch then called it quits as by this point the rain had started to get heavy and the tracks were just not worth the risk.   We hope everyone had a great day, and we learnt alot. I haven't done any editing on the pics so please let me know if you would like a number plate blacked out or pics removed. First I saw a pic of the car being snatched forwards with the front wheels were on almost full lock. This makes it much harder for the recovery vehicle, increases the risk of damaging the snatch strap and makes the recovery harder to control. The 2nd thing I saw with the same vehicle was it being recovered backwards from the rear tie down point. I can't even begin to tell you how dangerous this is. Have a look at this thread to see some potential results of doing that. Whoever was the red X-Trail driver don't take this as having a go at you personally. I just hope you learn from the experience and do it better next time.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Toddyh03)Thu, 17 Apr 2014 06:35:56 +0000 Re: Beerburrum run 13 April 2014https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2082532,from=rss#post2082532https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2082532,from=rss#post2082532I managed to upload a video to Photobucket.  It was a 1080p 3 minute MOV coded video but it took 40 minutes to recode to something with no definition and 10% of the pixels and then tell me the load had failed - however it was there when I looked. So a Photobucket interpretation of the video of the wet bit is finally attached for your amusement: nondisclosed_email@example.com (DogTrail)Wed, 16 Apr 2014 22:58:51 +0000 Re: Beerburrum run 13 April 2014https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2082527,from=rss#post2082527https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2082527,from=rss#post2082527OK guys, I think it might be time for some pics. It was my first time on dirt/mud/brackish water, so it was quite a learning exercise Newbie moment for me was not disengaging the ESP when my vehicle wouldn't move..not sure why...maybe something to do with the terrain I was sinking into, or the log keeping me from sinking any further!! It's a shame there's no video of me heading outbound just before turning back as I was WAY more sideways than I should have been (just ask Vickie), but at least I didn't get bogged in the really deep stuff A couple of plastic bits attached to the under carriage came adrift, but are back in place now and another bag of scrivets are on order. Fauna spotting of the day goes to the BIG eastern grey that loped in front of Jamie's car fairly early into the run (he was going pretty slow, so no chance of damage). It was also the first time I'd used my radios, so it was nice to know they work before I really needed them I'm happy to say that no X-Trail drivers had to call the RACQ due to car failure I hosed off most of the mud when I got home, but will give the exy a good gernie wash on the weekend. All in all it was a great experience, and a big thanks goes out to Vickie and Dave for organising the trip. I'm keen for another one any time soon. Cheers, Mark PS - No probs with publishing my number plate.nondisclosed_email@example.com (mfeodoroff)Mon, 14 Apr 2014 19:34:13 +0000 Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2082442,from=rss#post2082442https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2082442,from=rss#post2082442Mate, it's probably easier uploading them onto You tube and getting a link to post on the forum..nondisclosed_email@example.com (BlackThunda)Mon, 14 Apr 2014 12:50:54 +0000 Re: Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2082430,from=rss#post2082430https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2082430,from=rss#post2082430quote:Generally the Pajero handled everything well, The Pajero handled it magnificently - even the self-inflicted bits. It was very reassuring to know that there was a capable recovery vehicle available. Also, tail end Charlie is not the happiest of all positions in a convoy. Nor is the forward 'point' position. (Let's see if he goes underwater?) It all worked well on the day. (He didn't drown - despite the large bow-wave). Good people. Well organised. Solid backup. Serious 4WD people with heavy duty gear were in deep Doo Doo's on that day on that track, but everyone in the X-Trail Convoy drove home. Edit: Uploading my Video to Photobucket is bloody near impossible. After 5 hours, a few files at 2Mb each made it in from the folder (bulk upload) then I was hit with a general 'upload failed' message. That didn't help me much. I tried uploading one selected 200Mb file -the upload failed after 45 minutes. Not working for me tonight. I might try at another time before walking away - but don't hold your breath Further edit - I've attached a couple of stills from the video, it's easier. nondisclosed_email@example.com (DogTrail)Sun, 13 Apr 2014 22:45:11 +0000 Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2082427,from=rss#post2082427https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2082427,from=rss#post2082427No problems on my part about number plates. I have some pics but will wait for anyone to object I suppose. My day was eventful with mechanical issues that were not really mechanical. It turns out it was more my incompetence in my knowledge of my 4wd operating system. Once I had sorted that out, no dramas but good learning experience for me. Generally the Pajero handled everything well, was a smooth and comfortable ride on and off the bitumen. I have seat covers made for offroad, I must remember to put them on next time we go near mud Thanks Dave and Tracey for setting up the run and was great to meet up with some new forum members. Was wet indeed but we did get to see some pretty cool classic cars at the lookout. I have updated the State Challenge thread nondisclosed_email@example.com (BlackThunda)Sun, 13 Apr 2014 21:55:33 +0000 Beerburrum run 13 April 2014https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2082423,from=rss#post2082423https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2082423,from=rss#post2082423Forgive me if I have jumped the gun to make this trip report. However I was probably the first one home & I was impatient to say how much I enjoyed the day out. It was raining... but not torrential, so no big deal. An 'interesting' trip with some mechanical and terrain challenges presented to the participants. Some people had a more eventful trip than others. My Snowbeast just went there and then came back. Not even any significant mud to show on the exterior. What little there was, I wiped off with a cloth while resetting the tyre pressure...it's a long way from 25 to 38psi. Their reports will be more interesting and informative. The rain washed my car before it was even home. It hardly knew it had been away - However, I did find that the fuel consumption did climb to 9.23 L/100 Km for that trip when I refuelled the car (while prices were still down) & re-pumped the tyres on the way home. Naturally, the front plastic "sump guard" made the trip home in the boot. I lost the blasted thing on that last little bump in the entire trip. I did say a word or two. I'm currently uploading my car cam video to Photobucket, however I don't know how to edit video uploads so I'd suggest everyone either skips through or runs at high speed to zone in on the good parts. Also, there may be some AO rated language used when I was surprised. If easily offended, you may prefer to turn down the volume - but you will then miss out on the random, but surprisingly appropriate background music. It goes without saying that I'm also incompetent in hiding vehicle Rego numbers in that video dump. So before I post a link to the video - should anyone on that trip NOT want their Rego numbers shown, then please let me know and I won't show the link. Not a problem. I respect the right to privacy. nondisclosed_email@example.com (DogTrail)Sun, 13 Apr 2014 20:45:36 +0000
