Mine was on the black material, and when removed as above, did not cause damage.
My daughter had hers on the black part also , and used adhesive remover (like you use on bandaids and dressings) and then levered it off with a small putty knife.

On another forum, Dental Floss was suggested as a good cutting agent. Then apply the usual oils to remove the residue.

The residue that was on my car when I got it is on the black stuff. You'll find it's probably stuck on far better than your toll tag will be. Shouldn't be any problem.
