T31 Towing a large caravan Video

Just found this - comments from Nissan rep etc.

Notice lack of a weight distribution hitch - I wonder if UK law prohibits them as the tow bar is more of a solid goose-neck with a ball integral at end.

The X-Trail is towing an ATM 1850Kg Swift van!!! and so is near upper limit of towing capacity although the van seems to have an Alko AKS3004 Stabiliser coupling system.
read about HERE

That would be a big ask for a vehicle like the T31 - any comments???

Too interesting not to share!

Looks like a later model ST-L dCi

Re:

Even though the 2.0l Diesel manual X trail is identical to the Aussie spec. In the UK the rated max towing weight is 2200kg, not the 2000kg stated here.

X trail towing weights

There isn't a magic formula for what the max rated towing weight, it is just down to what the manufacturer thinks they can get away with.

Here, if you want to tow more than 2000kg, Nissan push you into something bigger (and costlier)

Generally in the UK, there is a rule of thumb of the Towed trailer not weighing more than 85% of the towing vehicle

Re: T31 Towing a large caravan Video

This caravan is too large and heavy for my liking to be behind an Xtrail. A mid sized 4x4 such as a R51 Pathfinder or Mitsubishi challanger would be more suited for this. The xtrail may buckle under the stress.

Re:

I saw this and thought I'd comment...
1) This is a Swift caravan and cannot be compared to any caravan made in Australia. The weights are completely different...
2) Over there they chase exceptionally light ball weights because caravans are speed limited to 80km/h and as a result they are generally stable without needing a correct design. This is further assisted by the AL-KO hitch that's on it. (these shoudn't be used on aussie vans either)
3) I have a 2000kg ATM caravan and tow it with my T31 CVT. I'm about to clock over 100,000km and have had literally nothing go wrong with it.

A caravan of this size in an Aussie form factor would be far too heavy. Probably closer to 2500kg ATM.

Re:

Hi guys, I need your help!
I got myself a nice Nissan X-trail 2009 diesel automatic (38000km) last November and I am very happy with it but totally confused regarding towing capacity (I am new so please not funny jargon..lol..)
I am looking at a Bailey or Swift Caravan 24 ft, they all around 1000kg heavy, here is an example:
http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/jindalee/caravan/bailey-ranger-460-4-berth-touring-caravan/1044423988

I want to go around Australia a few times down the track...so question:
Can my Nissan X-Trail T31 TS dCi do the towing or am I stretching my friendship with these kind of 24ft caravans....
Thanks for your help...
