Re: Led light bar

Hi Guys LED light bars are illegal, so fit them at your own peril.

The only ADR so therefore legal LED lights on the market so far are the ARB Intensity Floods or Spots.

NOT CHEAP but the only legal option at the moment.

I have the Floods, and wouldn't even look at the spots, as how far down the road do you need to see, much better to see more off to the sides, and the floods reach far enough down the road.

They should be OK for off-road use I would think.

Where do you get this crap? LED light bars are most certainly legal. There was some confusion a few years back because ADR required that you have an even number of driving lights (2 or 4). This has since been rectified so you are allowed an odd number.

This is an example from QLD I found doing a quick search.

Re: Led light bar

What is there stopping you from fitting 2 smaller LED lightbars, one each side of centre and both controlled by a relay from the high-beam like standard driving lights ?

Re: Led light bar

I have never heard of LED light bars being illegal. I would be interested to know where you got this info and is it Australia wide or only in Victoria?

Re: Led light bar

Hi Guys, not a single LED light bar on the market at the moment meets the ADR's. Australian Design Rules

You can fit them for off road use only, but use them on the road and the boys in blue can ping you. The only way to avoid this is to have it fitted but not connected. So put a short jumper cable between the connections and have it in the glove box. Just unplugging them won't satisfy most cops, been there done that with rollbar mounted spots many years ago.

I did significant research into this, believe me I didn't really want to shell out over $1500.00 + fitting on a pair of ARB Intensity floods when I could get a 50 inch bar for about a third of that.

ADR's are there for a reason, they stop inferior parts making it onto the market.

I have a relative selling these LED bars ( he is a major auto electrical wholesaler ) so I could have got them real cheap, he was the first to admit they don't pass and it is a real grey area at the moment. The same goes for a lot of the Cheapie LED taillights clearance lights etc. Hella are one of the few that pass ADR's.

ARB obviously spent the bucks to get ADR testing done to prove compliance, and so at the moment they are the only ones available.

Hope this helps.

Oh and by the way, Ive compared the ARB Intensity floods against some of the baddest LED bars and they trump them all easily, in both spread distance and colour temp 7000K.

Jalal's seen them he was impressed!

Have a great day guys. emoticon

Re: Led light bar

You won't find any ruling about single led light bars because there isn't one.
Vic rules

this link is to the national adrs. Clause 6.1.5 is the one that creates confusion. Read all the details and you will see it hasn't been updated since about 1991. The standards for registration take precedence over this outdated clause.
