P0350 error code - which coil to replace?

G'day all,

Long time reader... Great forum!

Got my first error code today - P0350

Engine was vibrating yesterday on the way home , engine light however did not come on. It chugged all the way home - 4km or so...

(I'd suspected it was a miss or a coil)

Next day...
Engine oil was a bit low... Topped that up... Car started fine... Drove all day... 1km from home... Engine vibrations start again but MIL comes on...
Conduct diagnosis > P0350

My question is... Which coil would it be?
Could it be more than one?
Any signs to look for when looking for a faulty coil? (The coil in my previous car would have a hairline crack in it when it died [twice])
Does P0350 automatically imply that it's the first coil on the left?
Any way of diagnosing besides taking it to an auto electrician/mechanic/Nissan?

TIA

Re:

You have to measure the output of the 4 coil packs with a multimeter.
The one that is giving an erratic or low reading is the bad one.

Thanks cooch,

Forgive my ignorance... Any specific points I should be putting the multimeter to conduct the test?
Whilst the car is running?

It seems to be an intermittent problem... And so, will it still be apparent?

Re: P0350 error code - which coil to replace?

Actually, the error code you are getting doesn't specifically state which coil pack it is. This is the exact description of this error code:

P0350 Ignition Coil Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction

It could well be the secondary circuit malfunction, in which case, the ECU is detecting a spark blowout due to one or more of the spark plugs having its gap closed or fitted incorrectly.

Have you recently changed your spark plugs? If yes, check the gap of all of them and make sure they gaped to spec.

Re:

Ok, so changed all four spark plugs (Bosch Platinum plus)
3rd plug from the left looked like it had excessive oil on the tip

Turned it over... Same problem (rough idle, chugging when pushing the accelerator pedal)

Noise and problem went away after 2 mins idling.

Took it for a drive, cleared the code (I figured if the problem came back the MIL would pop up again)

Turned it over again.... Problem came back....

Question: since the third spark plug was in a poor state, would that suggest ignition coil #3 would most likely be at fault?

I was thinking my next step would be to replace the #3 coil, then the crank and cam shaft sensor (if need be) - parts are arriving I the mail soon I hope?

Thoughts?

Re:

Inspect Spark Plug #3 by pulling it out and having a look at the gap. I just hope nothing inside the cylinder is hitting it.

Re:

Cooch: ECU/MIL already reset (is this what you mean?)

Jalalski: do you mean inspect the new plug that I put in today?

The previous one seemed fine (spacing wise) just full of carbon at the tip (the only one out of the four)

Re:

Resetting the ECU means getting the ECU back to factory presets, even though you don't have a MIL light on.
Sometimes the ECU doesn't clear the error code completely when replacing certain items.

There is a full step by step on re setting the ECU in the DIY section.
