Engine Pics - Inside 2003 2.5L Xtrail Ti-L ~200k

Hi Guys,

Had a head gasket go and wanted to show some pics of the inside with the head off. Keen to hear your thoughts...

I was considering a stop leak type product but opted for the proper fix.

It was a slight leak, coolant reservoir bubbling with exhaust gas, rough idle, loss of power, but not much else. I didn’t want to wait for it to completely go but who knows how long it would have held out.

Cheers!

All the oil in your runners and the caked on carbon of that burnt oil is the reason why some of us have fitted a catch-can to our PCV line.

Re:

Thanks much Kev, I'll definitely be adding one. Looks like the cost will be coming in around 1500-2000. I'm still questioning if I shouldn’t have used Thermagasket as everything I've read has been positive (and I've done a LOT of reading on it).

It looks like my fault happened near or between the 1 and 2 cylinders. The spark plugs on those cylinders were a bit steam cleaned as well...

Also, I think I'll replace the water pump for good measure and drive belt assembly as it has been rattling away.

The rattle could be from the timing chain due to the standard oil being too thin for our older engines.
I changed from the standard Castrol Edge 5W-30 to Penrite HPR5 synthetic 5W-40. The higher 40 rating makes the oil not so thin at higher operating temps and keeps the pressure to the hydraulic timing chain tensioner, which stops the rattles of the chain at higher revs.
Check your timing chain runners to make sure they are not worn or loose if you have been getting lots of rattling.

Re:

Hi Kev,

My rattles are coming mainly at start up (a zipping type one). But, the one that gets really bad is when I have the wheel fully turned with the AC on. I seems too that the AC makes the engine idle lower which definitely helps contributes.

I noticed some wear on one of the tensioners and have included a pic. The other one is perfect though.
This would lead me to believe there is some movement happening in there. I will definitely move to the suggested oil.

What do you think of the below? Cause for concern? I've read on the forum that replacing parts in this area can get very very expensive.

Cheers!

Re:

You should replace the tensioner full stop when doing work like this anyway.
PS: Don't let the chain slip off the gear.

Re:

Edit: I think you are referring to the replacement of the timing chain tensioner not the belt tensioner pulley. The chain could come off the gear when replacing this chain tensioner, I assume? I was/still am a bit concerned it could have come off the gear in its current state which is just having the head off.
It's really interesting learning this stuff! Thanks much to Jalaski for his help with this as well.

Re:

In regards to the timing chain have a look at this thread.

In this thread a fellow member Scott (Evorock) has completely stripped and re built his T30 engine.
There are plenty of pics.
On page 2 you will see what I was talking about the timing gear marks in my PM.
