T31 Auto Torque Converter Seal
Phillipa's exy was in for its 60,000km service yesterday and the muppets from NMG tell me that it needs a new torque converter seal ($1300 labour + parts) They tell me they found this because the under tray was full of fluid.
HOWEVER
The undertray had been removed (bash plate installed). No mention of how bloody difficult the bash plate is to remove and no charge on the invoice for topping up the fluid.
Should I suspect they have engaged mushroom mode and ignore it or get a 2nd opinion??

Re:
Go to another mechanic Alan, although it would be evident from the pool of oil under the car or on the up side of the bash plate whether it needs replacing or not.

Re:
I spoke to the manager as the muppets just quoted $940 to replace my rotors and pads (new rotors ordered last week) on the Navara. Must have really been hitting the brakes hard as it seems I've taken 2mm of the disks and used 10,000km of pad wear in the space of 450km. Anyway back to the manager, I asked him if the mechanic complain about taking the undertray off and he said "why its just the standard tray" I then mention that it had a bash plate fitted instead of the standard undertray and he said "oops the one I looked at was the Nissan tray", love it when you catch them out but I'll get my mechanic mate to check it anway...

Re:
Seems nothing has changed there at all.
You'd think they would match the car to the owner.

Re:
Seems a pretty amazing error by the mechanic in getting the diagnosis of two different cars confused!
I don't know that I'd waste money getting a second mechanic's opinion - I'd simply drive the car for a few hundred k's and watch for any transmission fluid leaks. A leak of the magnitude that he suggested would, I think, be quite obvious.
Another option would be to get the original mechanic to prove the defect exists - show where the leak is and how it was discovered.
I also highly doubt that such a defect would occur at only 60,000km in even the most mistreated X-Trail. Torque converter oil seals should last nearly the life of the car...my wife's Commodore had over 250,000km on it and the good old Trimatic transmission never leaked a drop.
