A few issues - maybe interrelated?

Hi All, back again...

I'm having a few issues mainly at cold start, maybe you guys can offer advice?

Engine seems to struggle when starting cold. Its been like this since I bought the car around three months ago. Doesn't really depend on outside temp (its been a mild winter here so far). Feels like its about to cut out but nearly always gets going. Takes about 30 secs to steady out. Mechanic checked it out, checked for for codes - none found. I don't have this problem if the cars been running for a while and I shut down and restart later (I've often gone to a game and the car starts fine up to 3 to 4 hours later). Only struggles if the car has sat overnight or after work (8 hrs+). Changed battery but problem persists.

I'm also getting a VERY occasional noise coming from the engine, again at cold start. I've only got this 3 times it the last two months since I got a new fan belt installed but when it happens its very noticable/memorable. Kind of a squeal but sounds more like a fishing reel being unwound if you get my meaning, quite loud but only lasts about five seconds then goes away. Got the belt checked by mechanic and he couldn't find any problems. The belt is normally quiet anyway.

A bit worried now though as when I started the car yesterday morning, noise started up, battery light came on, then CEL, then the engine cut out. Engine cranked but kept on dying. Eventually got it going on fourth or fifth attempt. Got to work no problem but when I was leaving it acted up again (got it started in less attempts though). No noise or problems starting today though, apart from the regular cold rough idle...

Also as well as this I have a low whine when accelerating/decelerating, audible in around second or third gear, makes no difference if the clutch is in or out so don't think its the transmission - sounds like its coming from the engine bay. Sound is not intrusive. You need to have the heater fans and radio off to hear it. Once up to around 60 kph it either stops or is drowned out by regular road noise.

Any ideas? Most of the above is intermittent and is very hard to demonstrate to a mechanic. I'm guessing alternator/fan belt slipping but would this cause the low whine when accel/decel?

T30 (70000 miles on the clock)

I'm probably miles off the mark here, but one has to start somewhere when troubleshooting...

Which oil (brand and viscosity) are you using in the car?

Re: A few issues - maybe interrelated?

No idea! Car was serviced by the previous owner at a Nissan dealer 3000 miles ago and they changed it then so I guess whats ment to be in there is there. Fluid levels are fine and it still starting (rough though, with the odd rattle). Noticed that the crank position sensor was replaced around 2010. Apparently it was giving the previous owner regular CELs. Could it be acting up again?

Re:

With the noise check the tensioner and bearings on the PS pump, alternator and water pump. Might be a shoddy bearing. It'll be pretty obvious which one is making the noise, try using a length of hose up to your ear and point it at each pulley bearing.

With the rough start from cold it could be lots of things, but it sounds a little like the problem I was having with the car when the headgasket went on me - it would have a bit of coolant in one of the cylinders and be a little hard to start. Hopefully yours isn't that though.

Head gasket!? Hope not too! Sorry to hear about yours though Ben. Where there any other symptoms when yours went? Being honest I've been under the bonnet non stop looking for something amiss but to no avail. No other classic signs of HG been knackered. Coolant was flushed by Nissan six weeks ago in prep for winter and the level has stayed constant since. Did you have to top it up a lot or was it not a noticable loss?
