Did I kill my 4W Drivetrain?

I think I broke'd my 4WD. 2011 DCI Auto. Taking the car to Nissan tomorrow, but keen to hear some thoughts.

Went for a drive north of Perth on the weekend through the bush and onto the beach. Mostly easy going to get there, ~10km hard sand. A few rocky bits and a few climbs, all pretty easy apart from the diagonal ruts. Most of the time I just leave it in 2wd or auto, only use lock briefly when needed.

We get onto the beach and get a few ks down and conditions start changing. Got off the main tracks to pass a bogged patrol only to get into soft, damp sloping sand and get stuck too. Managed to ease out with some maxtrax and get going again. It was pretty treacherous and getting back up off the damp sand onto the dry beach was tough, but only took ~5min crabbing along looking for some traction.

Parked on the firm stuff and spent the next 90 min digging a mate out trying to get him back up onto some dry level sand. When I came back to the xtrail and started it up, the ABS, traction control, and another light just like the trac light were on.
A guy in a 4WD ute had parked right next to me and was just leaving, and he got bogged trying to pull off. Now he was being a bit of an idiot just flooring it from a standstill, so I didn't think my 4wd wasn't working when I gently eased on the throttle and drove off easily in auto.
Turned off the beach and headed back inland and came across more diagonal ruts, but they weren't nearly as steep as anything I encountered earlier. Left it in auto but as soon as one wheel got air I lost all drive. Tried again in lock making sure I didn't feather the throttle, but gave it enough to allow the electronics to sort it out, but no joy.
Found another way in and from there I left in in 2wd as there was nothing that 10-12 psi couldn't handle with 2wd.
Got to a steep rutted descent, and decided to use lock and hill descent control. The appropriate lights came on as usual but nothing happened.
ABS etc warning lights stayed on for the drive home, and after washing the car I pulled into the garage and all warning lights were gone.
Still suspicious, I tested hill descent in the driveway, but it still didn't work.
Don't know if it's anything, but could sometimes hear a clicking/ticking from the front diff? when changing from on to off and off to on throttle, and sometimes when over bumps.

Any thought on what could have happened?
Did ~30km all up and certainly didn't drive it in lock long enough for it to heat up and shut down, let alone kill anything. Running low pressures there was plenty of grip for the most part that even in auto the rear wouldn't be engaging often.
Thanks.

Re:

I doubt there is anything wrong with it and the warning light you got are just the standard warning for the ABS/wheel sensors being full of sand or overheating.

It takes more than a driveway slope for the hill descent to kick in.

Check for sand in the teeth of your ABS ring on each wheel. It is located just behind the hub close to the lower CV joint. Follow the cable for the sensor if you can't find it by looking behind the wheel.
Or maybe a sensor has had a wire come loose.

Re: Did I kill my 4W Drivetrain?

Could be one of a couple of things.
1. Sand in the wheel speed sensors. This will freak out the ABS, ESP etc and cause the lights to come on telling you they have deactivated. Simply stopping the car, turning off the enginer and re-starting will usually sort this out.
2. Is your handbrake light coming on too? If so you could have sand in the rear drum (drum in disc) which is playing havoc with your handbrake and in turn mucking up your ABS/ESP. Simple solution is take off the rear wheels, spin the wheel so that the little rubber grommet on the drum is on the low side, remove the grommet and get the hose in there. (If grommet is missing you can buy replacement from Clark Rubber) Make sure you allow it to drain and dry before replacing the grommet and putting the wheel back on.

As for your hill descent not working on your drive, it's probably not steep enough. The hill descent needs to satisfy a few criteria before engaging. One is being in 4x4 LOCK and the other is a slope greater than 10% (???) or thereabouts.

Of course the worst case scenario is that you have snapped a CV. The fact you had ABS/ESP warning lights come on leads me to think is a sensor/electric issue rather than mechanical.

Re:

Thanks for the info.

All warning light reset to normal after everything was shutdown (while i washed it).
No handbrake warning at any stage.
It wasn't a hot day, but it does sound like a heat/sand electrical issue. Everything was washed thoroughly after. Spent enough time under the car washing the sand and seaweed out.
I did test hill descent today and still nothing. I was under the impression it would work regardless of steepness?
I guess i need to find a hill in Perth, easier said than done emoticon, before I waste my and Nissans time.
Any easy way to check 4wd without dropping skids on the lawn? emoticon

It has 3 conditions. Speed, 4x4 LOCK and angle of the terrain. All 3 need to be sweet for it to work.

Jack the front end and put on timber blocks. Wheels should spin in 2wd. Put it in 4wd and it should drive off the blocks.

Or find some dirt and do the same.
2WD should spin the fronts and 4WD Auto should not.

Thanks again emoticon

Cancelled with Nissan.

Absolutely right about hill descent needing some inclination. Didn't check the angle emoticon but it would have been ~10 degrees. Worked fine.

Thats how I've tested 4WD in the past Kev. Find some dirt, 2WD, tc off, handbrake on, dig some holes, try drive out. When you can't drive out in 2WD try in lock.
Just hoping I wouldn't have to get it dirty so soon after I cleaned it so nicely, haha.

Re:

Hill decent only works in Lock position in first gear, are you sure it is steep enough for it to work.

Re:

Yeah, sorry if I didn't make that clear, once I found a steep enough hill it worked as normal.
