Spot lights connected to reverse lights

Hey guys,

Just have a few questions relating to spot lights connected up to the reverse lights.

I live in quiet acerage area of QLD with no street lights etc and often find myself hunting for some sort of indication of where I am when reversing. I went out and bought some powerful LED bults for the reverse lights and they are useless. So I went out and bought me a nice set of BIG spot/driving lights. Question is - can I simply use the existing reverse light wiring?

Also I would like to intall them on the rear of the black roof bar that runs down the length of the car. pics below -

How deos that black cap come off the car? I would like to drill a 10mm hole in the top of it and run the wires down to the revese light cables so it looks nice and tidy.

Kindest regards

Mark

Re:

Am not sure about the legality of fitting rear facing spotties and in fact am not sure the ADR allows fitting spot lights that high anyway.

As to the roof rail end cap, it is being held by one bolt but to get to it, you will need to remove the entire plastic lining from the boot area and then drop the roof lining to see the bolt itself, so it's not an easy task at all.

Re:

Jalal is right, it is illegal to use as a reverse light that high. If it were a flood light for camping off it's own switch, that's alright.
Mount them down under the bumper and it would be OK to run off the current wiring providing that they don't draw too much power.

Not to deter you, but I've removed and modified both those rear plastic rail ends and it is a pain in the a$$ and a mildly monumental task.. if you go ahead, I'd suggest photo-documenting it for others on the forum (I forgot).

I know exactly what you are saying because I have done it with my T30 as well and after being through such pain, I decided NOT to share it with anyone else and not to document it....instead I always warn people about it emoticon

It's a job for the smash repairers! Degree of difficulty 11 out 10

Re: Spot lights connected to reverse lights

The reverse lamp circuit in the T31 is supplied by a 10A fuse located in the Intelligent Power Distribution Module of the engine bay, switched by the park/neutral switch of your automatic transmission selector.

Check the power consumption of the LED lights, add those to the 4A required for the dual reversing lamps already installed and make sure you are not exceding the fuse rating. DO NOT increase the size of the fuse to allow larger lamps to be connected.

Re:

4W driving at night and reversing can be a real PIA with the std lights. What I was thinking today, since I don't need a permanent solution, is to have a temporary yet secure LED light fitted near/on the tow bar, then run a short cable to the trailer plug.

If you have the newer flat style plug, there is a reverse wire (black), and obviously neutral (white). You'd have to check the rating, but since you wouldn't be running brake lights or indicators, you could use almost all available amperage.

Still haven't decided on the exact method, but I guess the best way is an easily removable bracket/bolt on my reese hitch recovery point (since it's alway in when I go off road). At night, bolt the light onto the recovery point and plug it in.

Re:

Why not get a hole saw of the right size to cut a hole in the bumper and mount it in there? Or get some LED 5050 strip lights and stick them to the bumper/up the sides of the rear tail lights for extra light. Having seen the two big reversing globes on the back of the T31 bumper I'm surprised you need more emoticon

Not true.
Everything for the trailer parallels from the normal Xtrail light circuits.
The reversing lights for the trailer still get supplied from the same 10A fuse as the Xtrail reverse lights so anything you hook up to the trailer plug still has to be less than the 10A fuse minus the 4A for the Xtrail reversing lights. There is no separate fuse for the trailer reversing circuit.
The brake lights and indicators run from the same brake light and indicator circuits as the Xtrail so they will not have any power until you apply the brake or indicate to turn so there will be no more "amperage" from these to use either.
