2wd to 4wd knob....what does it actually do?

Hi guys,

Ive had a quick search but cant seem to find the answer I am after.

My question is regarding 2wd to 4wd auto mode......not the 3 setting which is full lock.

if the exy detects slip at the rear wheels whilst in 2wd mode my understanding is that it will kick in automatically. So with that in mind what actually does the switch do from 2wd to 4wd auto?

If the exy uses a viscous diff then it would do the same job no matter what mode its selected in (2wd or 4wd) as it uses a heat sensitive fluid to activate and not mechanical.

If anyone can point me to a link so I can have a read or simply answer my question that would be fab emoticon

Thanks

Mark

Mark,
Scroll down in the link provided by Alan to find the reference to the Xtrail.
Yes in 2WD sometimes drive will go to the rear, BUT only under HARD acceleration. Otherwise, 4WD AUTO mode is what gives you the distribution of torque split between front and rear as needed for traction.

That explains why I only get a slight chirp from the front wheels when changing to 2nd and 3rd gear when the Turbo is on song.
