Just replaced the egine, now won't start, electical issues... I think
Hello All,
I have an 02 Auto X-Trail, which my wife loves, but unfortunately, the motor blew a about a month ago.
Now like I said my wife loves this car, so rather and wrecking and replacing the car I decided to replace the motor, and I got a really good deal on a 'new' fully dressed motor, which I was assured was for an 01-07 x-trail. The motor came from the USA via QLD and was originally for an Altima I believe. The block is exactly the same, although I did have to grind down two mounts on the side of the block to clear the transfer case, but after checking the original block, the same mounts have been ground down there.
So I got the motor and with the help of a hoist and some VERY good friends we changed the motor over the weekend.
The physical change over was relatively easy, when you have a hoist. We dropped the whole sub frame and steering, from under the car. We did have some issue getting the new motor to line up to the bell housing, but after removing the transfer case so you can maneuver the engine properly it slid in easily.
We got everything back into the car, all the sensors plugged up, had to change the knock sensor because the one on the new motor had a different plug on it, but everything else was the same.
Went to start it, it cranked beautifully, but just will not fire.
We have checked and we have spark, and there is fuel going into the cylinders, but unfortunately, it just will not start. I sounds like it wants, it ALMOST catches, but then just to the cranking noise.
We have rechecked all the sensor plugs, replaced the coil packs, done almost everything we can think of, but it just wont go.
I have a ODBII scan tool, and I am not getting any errors.
I have reset the ECU using the guide on this forum (removing the three fuses for at least 5 mins).
So any suggestions anyone would like to give me, i'd love to hear.
This is about the 5th engine I have changed (in five different cars), so will I will defiantly not claim to be an expert, I do have some clue as to what I am doing.
If all else fails I will have to take the car to a mechanic, but i'd rather not if I can help it.
Cheers
Tony

Re:
Have you put in a fresh set of sensors? Crank, CAM and O2?
A faulty crank and cam sensor may not register a fauly but they can get faulty due to age.

Re:
Yeah mate, I suggest you get a new Crank and CAM sensors at the very least, as the Altima onces could be different and your ECU may not recognise them correctly.
So, are you using the hurricane headers at the moment with the Altima engine?

How modified you mean? Gutted out completely?

Re: Just replaced the egine, now won't start, electical issues... I think
Well if you are getting spark at the plugs and fuel at the injectors then I can only think of 2 things to stop the engine kicking...
- Timing
If the timing is out by the chain out-of-sync with the camshafts or if the spark plugs are connected in the wrong firing order then the engine may fire on 1-2 cylinders but not enough to continue running. 3 cylinders would have it running rough.
The cam & crank sensors could also cause this.
- Compression
Obvious reason.
Next steps...
- Check correct connection of plugs for 1-3-4-2 firing order.
- Check compression for all 4 cylinders.
- Manually turn engine to TDC then with rocker cover off check valves for correct sequencing.
It won't be the O2 sensor or the cat preventing it from starting as the ECU runs the engine in open-loop mode when starting which ignores this sensor input.

Chisel plus hammer equals totally empty. Are you thinking not enough back pressure? I figured it would not make much difference as I only have 1 o2 sensor befor the cat.
It is only a temp thing till I get to the exhaust shop. As soon as I can book the car in once it is running.
Nope, am actually thinking that you may have caught the flakes of the cat. a bit too late and some of them are inside your engine. A compression test should tell if all cylinders are working as they should.
