While the carpet might help on sand a little, in mud it is just ripped under the wheel by the torque and does not help at all.
Watch this video testing different devices. Around the 50sec mark you see what little traction a flat mat does have on a sandhill.

Point taken.

Carpet lacks rigidity so the coefficient of friction is readily transferred to the base soil/mud/sand... so the carpet rucks up to be spat out the back in a serious bog.

Better than nothing but not as good as a proper recovery track..
