T31 Series 3/4/5 Roof rack options
Hi guys,
After searching extensively I did see a few threads about specific roof racks, but none discussing which one to get (price, performance, durability, etc).
These are the roof rack options I've found so far:
1. Nissan (OEM Thule?)
RRP $385, seems available retail for ~$280 mark
2. Thule
RRP $315 - $600+
The cheapest model looks loud, and no appeal for superior models due to price? (This is my assumption only... owners, please feel free to share why they are superior to the factory / what justifies their premium over nissan).
3. Rhino
RRP $339 - $351
I did see lots of posters seem to have these. Why did you get these instead of the factory? What makes these better / worse? How much did you pay?
4. Rola
RRP $340 - $351
Same as for Rhino...
5. Prorack Whispbar
RRP $345
I did note someone on these forums did have fitting problems. Is this standard across the board? or did someone have success with them?
6. Other
I'm sure there are more options out there that I failed to find. What did you get, how much did it cost, and why did you opt for this solution as opposed to the nissan option?

Re:
It all depends on what you want to carry on them.
They will all do the same job so it's really up to you and your personal liking.
Send Alan (rescue1) a PM as he is a Rhino dealer, he might be able to help you eith the pricing a little.

Re: T31 Series 3/4/5 Roof rack options
I have the Prorack Whisbar. Had them on my T30 then moved them to my T31. Installed on both with no problems. I have carried a full sized fridge on them before so they must be fairly strong

Re:
Todd, are you saying that the T30 roof racks can be fitted on a T31?
I thought the T31 was wider than a T30!

Re: T31 Series 3/4/5 Roof rack options
Yep sure can. They use a different fitting kit but the Prorack Whisbars are adjustable. When I bought mine it came with the fitting kit for both the T30 and the T31. So when I upgraded I just swapped them over and extended the bars by about 1cm each side.

Re: T31 Series 3/4/5 Roof rack options
Oh yeah it was well over the weight limit (mine is 80kg- Series II). Just took it nice and easy. Those limits always have a safety factor in them. Not that I would advise carrying that much load as a normal thing.
I bought mine because they are quiet. Can definitely confirm that. No noise ever. As for price I can't remember to be honest. Was several years ago. I'm sure it was under $300 though. I went and looked in a few shops. Got product codes then bought them online.

That's the catch mate. Didn't know the width of them could be adjusted to suit different cars, because there is no way you can fit the factory T30 roof racks on the T31 for example and it's the same for any non-adjustable roof racks.

Re:
Speaking for the Rhino Heavy Duty Bars:
When I have them on, they are noisy as hell. Whistle non-stop even at low speeds (40km/h, etc), so irritating. So only buy them if you specifically need the sturdiness of a heavy duty bar. I bought them specifically to mount my rooftop tent for the last christmas trip.
Like Todd's though, they are also adjustable. So size-wise, they'd fit either the T30 or T31, the only difference would be the mounting feet/kit for the particular car/model. I can't remember my exact price, but I think I paid the higher end of your quoted figures or just above? (I needed them quickly and couldn't be bothered looking around at the time)

Re:
I too have the Prorack Whisbar. Wait till supercheap have them on sale - have seen them under $250 with the fitting kit.
I like the 'through the feet' type bars (Whisbar, Rhino, Thule) than the rounded feet (Nissan OEM, Rola) as you get a bit more width. Also handy if you get an awning, as you can fit it right over the side of the car with no bracket overhang.
I sometimes I wish I went with the Rhino setup, as the list of accessories is higher - although I've noticed recently that Rhino is making t-bolts for ProRack as well.
I think the ProRacks are the quietest though. With pro rack, you slide the accessory's t-bolt on top of the rubber in the channel, and let it mould around it. With Thule/Rhino, you need to cut the rubber in the channel, which means you'll have a gap when you remove the accessory.
