"recommendations" from nissan service centre

Dear xtrail owners,
I would like to know your opinion about practicality of the following recommended extra services. Every time i serve my xtrail i am "advised" to go for "on-car injector flush" and "throttle-body service" besides usual list of checks/oil changes.
Nissan Sutherland wants $150 per each item ( that's where i served my car twice). Nissan Rockdale has a bundle of $200 something which includes 2 above services plus extra 3rd one.
My questions:
- is it worth the money?
- have you noticed any difference in car performance?
- if not, how do you know it has actually been done?
- is it worth doing in genuine Nissan service centre?
Thanks!

Re:

Just say "no thanks" to all of the above and save your money.

Stick to the capped price service schedule and ask them not to do anything extra.

Nissan Sutherland actually charged me less than the capped service price at the last service due to me having a K&N air filter which didn't require checking and/or changing.

Re: Re:

That is how they pad their profits: Say NO to everything extra (except the bonus gifts you get for the 'Service').

- So far my Dealer has "given " me an LED torch, BBQ pack and a Document holder with calculator. - I admit that I do like those little extra's emoticon

Good Public Relations on their part.

If wide awake, also tell them not to change the very expensive air conditioning cabin micro-filter every year if you don't use the a/c all that often.

Or just go by a Ryco for $30 and DIY... takes all of 5 minutes

Re: Re:

$30!

I was charged $55 on 'special' for the filter alone as a supply cost at the last service!

Apparently it was heavily reduced from the normal cost.

Fitting was obviously absorbed into the set Service fee but I saw that item as an added unnecessary cost on the bill and swore never to pay for that again.

Well , to be fair, maybe the filter might need replacing every 2 -3 years with my usage, but not annually.

Up-selling is the name of the game if a Dealer is to make a profit.

Re:

Cabin air filters from the manufacturer are a great ripoff and a great way for the dealers to make money (along with flushes, intank injector cleaner etc) Of course they are made in China/Thailand/Indonesia as well just like the other filters are, not Japan.

For a T31 you can get the Sakura filter for about $25-30 locally from a sakura stockist (eg sparespro or sydney filter service) http://sakurafilter.adr-group.com/index.php/productdetail/index?snum=CAC-1810&title=Sakura%20Number%20-%20CAC-1810&id=2

For a T30 I bought a Fram filter, this has baking soda and carbon in it, absorbs odours, even heavy truck odors and rubbish tips end up getting absorbed quite well. http://www.framcatalog.com/PartDetail.aspx?b=F&pn=CF10140 - you can get them from Amazon quite cheaply

One of the funniest things is reading a Toyota or Nissan manual they will say that each car runs best with NO additives, yet plenty of their dealers will upsell you said additives

Re:

Fuel additives are useless if you're filling up with 98 as they already contain the additives which clean your injectors. If you have missed a service or you can see sludge build up in the top end I would recommend an engine flush additive but then again you can buy them from nearly any auto parts store and DIY.

Cabin filters are a rip off. Air filters too. Oil filters used are generally the same quality as a general filter.
This is all from a Volvo perspective but you can save a lot of money by DIY with servicing. We have many customers come in for services. No adds, No filters. Only oil change and oil filter and inspection for brakes and LCA bushes and engine mounts.

Save your money.

Re: "recommendations" from nissan service centre

All air that comes into the car via the vents goes through the cabin filter - irrespective of Air-conditioner on or off.

As all this air goes through it constantly when the car is moving, replace it every 40k as recommended.

By the cheapo and do it yourself (takes 30 seconds)
