Re: 4WD not engaging

Yes oil will come out. There is a drain plug at the bottom. It will only be the pinion gear oil about 300ml.

Taking it out will tell you what internal damage there is to the pinion gear and ring gear as this pic shows of the insides of mine

Re:

Well I took a look at transfer box today (difficult without a ramp!)

Unusually its been painted black at some point?

I removed the tail shaft and there is only a little resistance if I turn the flange from the transfer box, should this not be difficult to turn or almost impossible in gear?

I think it will be too difficult for me to remove the 7 bolts to remove it as I have no ramp and laying under the car was hard work with the subframe in the way

Re: 4WD not engaging

Yes I would expect it to be impossible to turn with the transmission in gear.

Hopefully you noticed a large nut inside the end of the flange which would be holding it onto the pinion shaft.

Re:

Hmm didn't look for that, when turning it it did feel to have a little resistance but I could still turn it

I think I could probably just about get those 7 bolts out and remove pinion if you think it will find the issue?

The ideal scenario would be pull the pinion out and hope its just that and just swap it in situ with a good one..... tho clutching at straws here.

Worst case scenario is its an issue at the gearbox end where the two meet

Re:

I have just been looking at the part number of my transfer box its: 8H503 on ebay the only boxes with this part number are for automatics? mine is a manual

Has some one put the wrong transfer box on hence no 4x4?

I think I've found my fault, looking at the manual transfer boxes 8H513 in pictures the spline is longer to the gear box! Some one has fitted an auto to mine which has a shorter spline! hence no drive! though I stil get drive to the front right wheel?

I see there is an inner and outer spline that goes to the gear box the inner giving drive to front wheel the outer, and the which is too short as for an auto!

Most transfer boxes on ebay are:8H513, I think 0's are foe autos!

Re: 4WD not engaging

Yes Ricky you are correct.

According to the Amayama parts website catalogue, the correct transfer assembly for the manual transmission is indeed the 33100-8H513 so someone before you has fitted the wrong transfer.

Well done finding your problem, but now how to rectify it ?
Was it purchased from a dealer and is it still under sales warranty ?

Re:

This was a cheap secondhand car purchased privately so no warranty!

I can pick up a recon transfer box cheaply off ebay and will get it fitted at my local garage

Hopefully thats all it is!!
