Re:

The 4WD Relay in your T30 (which seems a Series II) is located under the driver's side glovebox I believe.

Re: 4WD not engaging

are you talking about the top storage compartment? Has anyone here tested or replaced the 4wd controller before?

Re:

Yes. You can either test the 4WD Relay itself or the signal it sends to the coupling like Kev mentioned. In either cases you should get a signal at the 4WD solenoid.

Re: 4WD not engaging

Chris,
You can only measure current if your meter is in-line with the curcuit.
Also be VERY CAREFULL measuring the voltage from the ABS/4WD controller as using the wrong earth point can blow the output of the controller and then you will have to replace it.

So start simple and cross everything else off the list first...
- measure the resistance of the 4WD solenoid at the electronic coupling.
- measure the continuity of the wiring to the 4WD solenoid, both the signal wire from the 4WD relay and the earth.
- exchange the 4WD relay with a known good replacement...the electronics will pick up that the coil has failed but will NOT detect if the contacts do not switch.
- measure the wiring continuity from the ABS/4WD controller to the 4WD relay...UNPLUG the controller harness after the battery is disconnected to measure the wiring continuity to inhibit the chance of any damage to the controller.
- measure the voltage to the 4WD solenoid at the connector...absolutely the last thing to do BUT for this you should have the Xtrail with all 4 wheels off the ground and someone you trust very much to have their foot lightly on the accelerator with other foot firmly on the brake and in 1st gear with LOCK mode selected as voltage is only sent to the solenoid when the accelerator is pressed.

Re: 4WD not engaging

Thanks for all the info. I just need some help identifying the 4wd solenoid and the 4wd relay. Exactly where its located and a description of how it looks. Sorry for the dumb questions but i don't want to do anything wrong here.

Here you go:

As I said, you have to remove the front storage box to be able to see/get to the 4WD Relay (control unit).

Re: 4WD not engaging

So i had a look under the car. I tried measuring the amps from this set of wires (while disconnected) while the car was in lock mode and acceleration tapped a couple of time but cant seem to get a reading. While unplugged i do get the 4wd warning lamp on. I also opened the drivers side box and found the controller but have no idea where to start prodding with my tester. I took a couple of photos.

Re:

Mate, I don't think you have any problems as the lock is engaging correctly and signals correctly on the dash. Do one more test and flick the dial to AUTO and do the wheel spin test on gravel road and see if the rear tyres engage, as the transfer of power to the rear happens in AUTO mode as well when front wheel spin is detected.

Re: 4WD not engaging

Chris,

Why are you so determined to try and measure the AMPS ? You can't measure the current from an open plug as the circuit detects no resistance and shuts down with the 4WD fault indication you saw.

Measure the OHMS OF THE SOLENOID itself. It could be a high resistance and although the circuit is detecting it is there it might not be producing enough current to transfer the full torque.
Then we can compare your measured value with the correct value to tell you if it is OK.

Re: 4WD not engaging

Hey guys.

Im taking it to a car electronic specialist today. I clearly dont know what im doing so i need all the help i can get. Can you provide me with the correct readings for the solenoid en in auto and lock mode? I will give it through to them to test and get back to you.
