Re: 4WD not engaging
Hi Chris,
Are you making sure that the car is completely stopped before you engage 4WD Lock?

Re:
You will need to check the 4WD Relay and see if any of its wires came loose.
This diagram will show you how the system operates, so you know what to trouble-shoot:
You also need to check all 4 ABS/Wheels sensors, to see if any of them is damaged, but usually a faulty ABS sensor will trigger a fault in the ECU and you should get a flashing light in the dash.

Re: 4WD not engaging
First thing to do Chris is tell us what you mean by "everything lights up as normal".
The 4WD indicator and LOCK indicator have particular combinations which will tell us if things are normal or what might be wrong.
The system can diagnose if there is an open circuit in your 4WD electric coupling or your 4WD relay is faulty or one or more of your wheel ABS sensors are faulty and show you with these lights, so an exact explaination for both Auto mode and Lock mode will help greatly.

Re: 4WD not engaging
OK Chris, the 4WD indicator bulb is functioning (lamp test when ignition on) and the other indicators are showing correctly for LOCK mode engaged.
Now, if you drive normally in AUTO mode for about 10 mins, does only the Auto mode indicator stay on or does something else happen ?

Re: 4WD not engaging
It seems as though everything is OK.
Are you sure 4WD was not working on the beach that day and that there were no flashing lights or lamps not illuminating ? Just because you got bogged does not mean your 4WD was not working, especially if the sand was deep and soft.
Only suggestion I have at this stage of diagnosis is to check the resistance measurement of the 4WD solenoid in the rear electric coupling. If it is OK it should be about 2.45 Ohms.
