Re: UHF Antenna mounting - not installation

No A bar and bloody hard to come by now emoticon The OE fittment A bar was expensive in the first place but yes a good place for a rod, though some loss of signal for 27mhz.

Re: UHF Antenna mounting - not installation

Update, while this mount may work for 2M however is not working 27MHZ not enough reflection or grounding in this location emoticon

Having very stormy weather here, managed to get a couple of hours with a SWR meter, having installed an additional ground wire, could not get below 2 REF. I had almost a clean 1.1 with the mag mount on the rear part of the roof !

Seems the lack of capacitance is causing a problem for HF/CB frequency. Do not try this method without having robust unit which can handle high SWR reading. You can blow a rig if you get over 3 !

The T mount would have been ideal, but I will have to have a re think. I have a 150 mm mag somewhere, may use that and fit on the rear roof. May have to fit roof bars back on to act as anchor for cable if run cable forward. Just plonk in rod when needed.

Not sure whether to run the wire back and then inside or run along roof rail yet ?

Re: UHF Antenna mounting - not installation

I have spent some time now thinking of a way around the problem of a mount for my CB aerial as you know from previous posts, and had varying degrees of success. This may be of some help for UHF location....

I rummaged through some of my old Land Rover sites and came up with a solution emoticon

The kit was from the UK4X4Center, who have a "shop" on Ebay, look for rear CB aerial mount. It does mean drilling two holes in your boot.

Re: UHF Antenna mounting - not installation

Certainly looks neat Charlie. Thinking about installing a CB myself....It looks like a light type of antenna so no strain on panel work. I guess antenna easily unscrews when not in use! What type/range CB have you installed?

cheers

that does look very neat, few questions though. does it touch the roof when you open the boot? will it wobble and touch the glass at all on a bumpy road?

Re: UHF Antenna mounting - not installation

With the boot open, even the long Sharman Modulator causes no issue, if you open the boot slowly. The tip would reach a roof rack if fitted. The length of the rod and shaft are well away from the window, I am working on a shorter verison of the Sharman too, if the SWR and ground are good I would go with the shorter rod. I would not recommend a stinger, thats the one with spring coil at the bottom, I reckon that could hit your glass. The mount has a reinforcing plate inside. I think a good quality shorter antenna would work, less stress on the mount too. I have now fitted a quick release making it easier to take off the rod should it be need. Do not use a short one quick release like Moonraker, they are no good, and wobble emoticon

Image

Having worked out the approximate length of the coax needed, I fed the antenna wires through the concertina conduit on the drivers side.

Image

Feed the coax down in to the boot having removed the card, careful with those plastic poppers on the card. I made sure I had enough to easily fit the ends to the mount.

I undid the the top of the rear pillar plastic trim (that's what is on the left handside of the pic) enough to get my hand in, then fed in the connector end through the hole and pulled it through where the wires go from the boot.

There is a flap to stop rubbing of the cables, which you will have to pull up. Then pull the cable through. Do this slowly so you do not take off any of the shielding form the coax as the pressed steel body has quite a sharp edge. You can see the roof lining in the pic.

Image

Once done, I concentrated on the mount. I marked out the location using masking tape. I drilled 3mm pilot holes first, this helps stop the larger drill bit skipping and ensures you get the position correct.....

Image

Fitting using the instructions supplied means you need to either have very thin hands or long reach ratchet spanners. I put the mount in place with a dab of heavy duty sealant (Unibond Extreme which has a 35 year warranty) and held the internal plate in place with a dab of super glue to and bottom. Then attached the washers and wires, before fitting the nuts.

Image

I fitted an extra earth wire which you can see to ensure good electrical earth. Having checked the nuts were tight, I then turned my attention to the coax going in side the vehicle.

I refitted the rubber conduit and ran the coax up behind the roof lining. I folded the flap back down across the cable and pushed the plastic trim back into place. I spent time carefully feeding the cable up behind the roof ling working forwards, with only the B pillar being difficult. This is because of the seat belt mount, you can do it without undoing the nut, just be careful with the coax. Follow the roof lining to the A pillar and then down as far as the bonnet release handle. The simplest way to tuck the coax in is to pull the door seal down and then push the cable up so it sit just inside the roof lining, then replace the seal.

I fed the coax across the plastic from just above the bonnet handle to the center console. I secured the cable with ties. And thats it, not pretty but functional, with a shorter rod good for convoy and tree safe.....
