6dB will give you longer range over flat ground (e.g. highway driving) than 3dB. 3dB will give better all round reception when in hilly country. Depends on your needs as to what will suit best.

I had a Z bracket installed for around a year. Even a 1.6mm thick bracket will rub and vibrate as it moves. I wrapped mine in electrical tape but it still did rub off some paint. To me they are a temporary solution only. They will do the job until you get a nudge bar.
As for the roof mount, someone who has installed the roof lights could probably help you with mounting options there.
