UHF Antenna mounting - not installation

I am wanting to instal my UHF Antenna on the roof rack channel - front passenger side. This set comes with the 60cm? aerial when on trips and the interchangeable 6-8" one for around town (similar size to the radio aerial).

Has anyone done this and does it look a neat and clean install? I can get it riveted to the front(ish) part of the rack and the wire running down the window channel into the engine bay compartment. Local installer is concerned it wont look neat (without seeing vehicle). A quick test by removing roof rack slot and running co-ax wire down looked ok to me.

Secondly the local installer is trying to persuade me to use the window stick on set rather than the above (again two sizes) but am not convinced it will look right for the exy. Does anyone have this mounting and are they happy with it?

I definately don't want the bonnet "z" bracket installation or nudge bar installation.

Am seeking thoughts, comments and any issues in the event windscreen needs replacing for either method others may have encountered with their installations.

Many thanks

Carol

(have looked through the forum to see if this topic is covered but nothing is jumping out - If duplicated, apologies)

Re:

So the coax will run outside the car? If so I think it will look bad. But that is my opinion.

Maybe you could look at how/where people run wires for their roof rack mounted lights?

Mounting up high is the best option, but the bonet/nudge bar works fine for most situations, but if you don' twant it there, the roof rack chanel may be a good option. Would you consider a permanent mount? Maybe you can run wire either up near the radio aerial and drill through there, or at the rear, just in front of the hatch?

Problem with going that route is re-sale value may be less, but if it is done properly and waterproofed, it won't look too bad if the next owner doesnt want a UHF.

Yes - the coax would be outside unless someone knows the best way to get it into the window pillar without noticeable holes if resale came about.

I am not one for drilling holes in vehicles - criminal emoticon

Unless someone else can come up with some good methods of mounting it looks like I may have to go with the windscreen stick-on type.

Cheers

I have heard the windscreen mount ones tend to fly off at highway speed. Is it purely reception issues driving your not wanting the Z bracket or nudge bar mount? I have a Z bracket on mine and it works really well. I get really good reception.

Hi Toddy

I don't like the bonnet mount - too worried about paint wear. The bracket doesn't give much room between side panel and bonnet.

I will check with the installer what guarantee they give on the window mounting adherence. I have pestered them silly with questions over all sorts with the mounts.....

I personally don't do too many k's country driving so it is really just for general communication whilst driving. Hubby's patrol is well kitted for the rugged stuff that we do.

Friday arvo is "D" day so if anyone else has any further comments I would be interested to hear them.

Cheers

I wrapped my Z bracket in tape to stop rubbing metal on metal.

Re:

Problem with mounting on a glass surface is that the reception will be rubbish, if it works at all.
The ariel mount needs to be ground to a metal surface to work properly, ie roof rack, bull bar or body (Z bracket).

Now that's a good thought Cooch!

That will really give me something to quiz them over - I am supplying the unit and the last thing I want is them saying it is my unit. Brand new in box but have still asked them to bench test before installing.

Another thing is that the glass mounted ones are only 3Db where as the bonnet one is a 6Db - so that takes me back to the db I really wanted.

Just have to really watch paint work tho.

I really like your recommendation tho not the solution but one must give somewhere I suppose emoticon .

Cheers

Re:

Definitely bench test the unit before install.

Try getting them to bring the antenna down in through the passenger side door (latch end) and going straight into the top of the pillar there. Should only have about 3inch of cable outside. I'll grab a photo tomorrow for you if my work mate beings his own car into work. He has a hatch, so all antennas have to go on the roof rack.

Get the fold over type mount if possible too. Let you go under those garages without breaking it off.

a pic to show where the best spots are.

My new Uniden was DOA and I had to uninstall the entire thing since the shop in perth was being absolute idiots. They were also refusing to adhere to consumer laws to replace it as well, unit I rang with a few choice threats. Then they only changed half of the box over.

I would expect an external run cable will create more wear on the paint than the Z bracket?

Just making sure you realise that the higher DB doesnt equate to larger range as such.

I use 6db most of the time and switch to 3db when I am in the bush. But I always carry my 6db as well in the bush to get longer range from a lookout.
