17" spare options

As some of you know, coming across well priced 17" alloys, to have a full size spare, is down to luck... and more luck!

Has anyone tried other rims manufacturers? The RAV4 steel 17"x6.5 or Territory 17"x6.5 (or 7) have similar offsets (+42 / +36.5 respectively) and the 114.3x5 stud patters

Curious to know what others have done.

Hoping to pick up an X-trail alloy for a full size spare, and a second 17" rim for a secondary spare (outback trip). Lease company will pay for the 2 spares if they're in 17"

Re: 17" spare options

Hey Michael,

There's a couple on ebay at the moment. Fancy a trip to Melbourne to pick them up?

Item number: 181155844402

FYI - I picked up a 17" genuine T31 alloy rim from Nissan 4WD wreckers today that I will use as a full size spare. Perfect condition @ $330. Ouch! Apparently they are hard to come by though....

Hey Dave,

Thanks for that - but I ended up getting a 17" steel one, which fits perfectly. No idea from what Nissan car it was from (probably a Murano). Maybe if i see a cheaper one, i'll consider it, but $330 vs my current steel one... happy to use steel for now.

Re: 17" spare options

Have tried to find a cheap second spare 17" rim for my X-trail 2009 TS in Brisbane with no luck. I only need a rim as I have a spare tyre.
Apparently none have been wrecked here lately!

Can anybody tell me what other models of Nissans or other manufacturers that would have ordinary 17" steel rims that are compatible?

Presently my car has alloy wheels with Hankang C-20 light truck tyres size 215/R17c 104/107N. These ride beautifully and are very quiet.

Any old steel wheel that will fit will do as it will be only an emergency standby. Did they ever make ordinary steel wheels for my model X-Trail?

I will be towing a camper trailer from Brisbane to Darwin via the top end and feel happier with a second car spare as I will be traveling over some rough stuff.

I'm 78 and a bit too old to repair a tyre in the middle of nowhere!

Re:

I recently got a good 17 spare rim from a wreckers, then went and got a tyre fitted. Yeah the 17 will fit the spare section but you gotta get the exact width tyre. The specs on my spare I got were the same as the ones on the Xt but the sidewalls sit out just a fraction more and the cargo cover now wont sit flat. What a waste of money the tyre was, now I gotta spend more on one with the "exact" same width walls. The space saver given for a car that has 4wd ability is lame as. Watch the actual width of the fitted tyres sidewalls.

Jon, I have a genuine alloy 17 inch rim with 225/60/17 tyre as a spare and it fits perfectly.
Some members have 225/65/17 spares and I believe they also fit!
What size tyre are you using?

Re:

Dave, the 225/65/17 fits if it's deflated to 7 psi or something like that. It won't fit if fully inflated to highway pressure. A couple of reasons there why I got a wheel carrier for the spare. emoticon

I didn't have this problem fitting a full size 18" alloy wheel and tyre in the back on my Ti

Full/normal tyre pressure as well.

Re:

Mate, exact same size in width and height as is on my T31. But as it was just for a spare I only got a $150 one instead of the Dunlop. The tyre itself looks ok but the width of the actual sidewall is a cm wider each side meaning the cover wont sit down flush. It sits up and you cant close the thing down. Iv had tyres on other cars where the sidewalls were a little wider than others even though the dimensions for tread width and height were the same and had no probs with spares fitting in the spare space area. I guess they had plenty of room for small differences. Not so apparently with the X Trail. I did my money and have to get another tyre with the exact same sidewall width as the Dunlops. Trouble was when I got it I didn't check then and there if it fitted. Such is life.

Re: 17" spare options

Jon, we still don't know what size tyre you purchased (except that its 17") or what brand. If we know that then others may avoid the same problem.

cheers
