Re:

That fault code P0031 is apparently the heater circuit of the O2 sensor #1 (top). There is a couple of ways to test it but basically the fault according to the FSM either means the heater circuit is bad inside the sensor or there is a wiring problem. Make sure the mechanic tests for resistance/broken circuit through the heater wires/circuit going through the top O2 sensor, all the way back to the ECU module.

Pasting from the FSM

P0031 - Diagnosis: Heated oxygen sensor 1 heater control circuit low
Condition: The current amperage in the heated oxygen sensor 1 heater circuit is out of the normal range.
(An excessively low voltage signal is sent to ECM through the heated oxygen sensor 1 heater.)
Causes: - Harness or connectors (The heated oxygen sensor 1 heater circuit is open or shorted.)
 - Heater oxygen sensor 1 heater

Re:

Hi Robin, your conditions sound similar to mine - first one o2 sensor then the other. I haven't had the second one replaced but I hope that fixes it.

I know that our causes could be completely different, but it's worth noting that sometimes you have to follow a few leads (and push a few mechanics) to get it solved! Link here and here emoticon

Re: replaced o2 sensors

Have had similar problem with Maf sensor recently. Codes came up for faulty sensor, so I checked sensor first as is a $700+ part to replace. There was no 12V feed to sensor so off to autoelectrician, to find a break in the wiring loom about 8" away. A $165 fix. (there is another post in the forum with same problem and break in wiring, so maybe not uncommon)
I would check the O2 sensors themselves before replacing.
From my experience, I would take sensor problems to Autoelectrician you can trust, rather than a mechanic. Mechanics will want to change part first, ask questions later.

Re: replaced o2 sensors

Sheesh we have this problem too! 2003 X Trail - Auto. Replaced the 02 sensor two years ago and then replaced cat converter last year. Now engine light is on and computer says O2 sensor again. Book it in to same exhaust repairer who is unable to budge the sensor he replaced two years ago. He thinks despite the fault code it should be looked at by a sparky as it is probably not the sensor and likely the wiring. he says revs would be all over the place (hunting) if the sensor was faulty and apart from idling a little rough the engine seems fine.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

Re: replaced o2 sensors

Why did you have to replace the cat converter and what was it replaced with?

Re:

Thank you for your reply,
We replaced the cat because it was noisy, partially blocked (I saw the old one once removed) and because a trusted exhaust shop recommended it after doing many other X trails of this vintage (2003). I believe it was an after market item.

Re:

I'd be more curious to know why he decided to replace the cat. converter in the first place and if he noticed any signs of flaking of the ceramic core of the old cat. converter which would suggest further problems and pitting damage of the cylinder walls. Your idling problem could be more serious than you think and the exhaust shop that replaced the cat. converter for you needs to perform compression tests to assure you that no damage to the engine was caused by the first cat. converter.

As to the O2 sensor replacement, if there is damage in the cat. converter it would have damaged the O2 sensor as well and if there is flaking, it would damage any O2 sensor you fit later on.

Re:

Thanks again,

I will take this info back to the exhaust shop and see what they say. It should probably be noted our X Trail has done 300,000 km's up and down the Sydney - Central Coast Freeway and now regularly requires oil in between servicing. Also it had a head gasket replaced 12 months ago.

Re:

If that's the case, the rough idling should be the last of your worries LOL emoticon

You're almost due for either a complete engine rebuild or an engine replacement by the sounds of it.

Re:

Yikes!

Any suggestions for a complete engine rebuild on the Central Coast and perhaps ball park cost?
The car is changing owners and going to Grandma. So instead of commuting up and down the freeway it will be used occasionally to do the local shopping and ferrying around.Even though it is 10 1/2 years old and 300, 000km it is a L-Ti with all the mod cons, bull & tow bar. Apart from engine light, rough idle and using oil. It drives well and seems to good to throw/give away.

Many thanks
