Leak from rear main seal?

Hello all, I looked at a car today which appeared to be mint. I don't have time for a racv check as the car heads interstate once purchased in 3 days. Anyway, it's a series 3 T31 st-l with around 60,000km. I did a quick overlook of the cars mechanicals and while everything looked great, infact it looked exceptional, there was a dark patch on the rear main seal where the auto tranny meets the engine. There was no dripping, just a bit dark looking on the gasket. Is this a sign of a soon to be leak or just the seals ageing.

The car still has new car warranty, however my closest nissan dealer is 300km away, so would prefer no major issues for the first year.

Thanks
Will

Re:

It could be just a bit of road grime that has stained the area.
For a car with 60k on the clock it should be unlikely that the rear seal would have failed.

Keep an eye on it to see if it develops a leak.

The car is very tidy and has a full service history. There was some dirt stuck to the bottom of the seal.

Re: Leak from rear main seal?

Picked up my X-trail on Monday, loving the way the car drives. Really impressed with the overall handling and ride comfort. Car has already been picked up for its move from Melbourne to Broome.

I took a picture of the leak? There has been no oil dripping and after touching the dark patch, it wasnt wet to touch. Also, if it is a leak, I cant work out how it has moved upwards into other parts of the surface. Fortunately, the car is still on Nissan warranty, however, unlucky for me, the nearest Nissan dealer is 300km away from my new address. The car has full service history, with the last service very recently. Also wasnt picked up by mechanic doing road worthy.

Might just monitor it until the next service. Was also thinking of giving it a clean and seeing if it goes dirty again.

Re:

Hey Will,
Leave it the way it is and get Nissan to have a look at the next service, it could be the rear seal or the CCS bearing (Concentric Slave Cylinder) [thrust bearing] as it is a hydraulic one. That is if it's a manual.

I know it's a long way but worth the piece of mind.

PS, Be sure to mention it when you book in for a service so they can look at it on the same day, otherwise you could find yourself making another trip to get it fixed.

Re:

That looks like the transfer case gasket leak I had in my T30 and Nissan replaced the gasket at no charge to me back then. It was also only a sweating type of leak and never wet.

Re:

Not sure where my pic of the seal went, but booked the car into nissan who had previously told me it was a rear main seal that may have gone. But after inspection, they believed that there isnt an issue and inside the gearbox there was no issue with the seal. I plan to get that in writing at the next service incase an issue pops up when its out of its warranty.
