The clip is probably 1cm from the end of the pipe. If you cant see it you should be able to feel it.

Re: EGR Valve Cleaning & EGR Related MIL Error Code

Hi guys I remove and clean my EGR Valve without removing the steel pipe from the turbo to the intercooler. I just remove the rubber elbow.

Re: EGR Valve Cleaning & EGR Related MIL Error Code

Done about 500kms after fitting the Provent. cleaning the intercooler & the turbo piping to intercooler, replacing air filter element and can report as follows :
lots of oil collecting in drain from Provent
very little oil spray (virtually nothing on the MAF side of the air filter element
oil still pooling albeit in smaller amounts in 'turbo' piping
and unfortunately P0488 error still occurs typically after a 50km run.
EGR valve motor actuation working (ie butterfly moving properly).

See my comments in General Discussion about my plans for the Xtrail emoticon

Re:

Sorry to hear you're giving it up John...but given your circumstances I can understand why you might want to.

I've now done 45,000km and have been religiously following the advice of my mechanic who suggested I give her a bit of 'right foot' on regular occasions to keep the boost levels up and to clear the EGR system. Contrary to what Toddyh mentioned a few posts back, the EGR valve actually opens at high throttle settings (go figure), so perhaps my mechanic's advice is not so far-fetched.

I'm also using LiquiMoly Clean and Boost in the fuel each tankful which heightens the fuel burn efficiency and reduces smoke (and therefore soot) output.

Thus far, all good.

John, good luck with the sale, mate.

Re: Re:

I have kept a strict log of every time the EGR light came on and driving conditions that preceded each occurrence. I can honestly say that I do not know what is causing the issue. A hint or clue might be that the 'time to error interval' became consistent once I fitted the Provent - almost every 50km or one start/stop cycle.

Had it into the dealer and all they can say is replace the ***g valve, but I know it is in pristine condition. i did consider replacing it, but had to make a value judgement call on dollars and downtime.

Sort of. It will be open at high revs when not accelerating (i.e. holding constant speed) but it will definitely close under hard acceleration. If it opened during hard acceleration you would lose power (some have experience this - hence the need to clean the EGR valve as it gets stuck slightly open).

John it may be a little late now but have you looked for a 2nd hand EGR valve? I found quite a few from Europe that would have been under $200 incl postage a while back on ebay.

Re: Re:

I did Todd & even put a couple on the watch list. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the valve - the actuation motor measures fine & works well (compared the readings to a mate's 2011 TS). I think you are right with the getting stuck slightly open because on all three occasions I have had it off the buildup continues. I did think after the intercooler clean the only source of oil from from the exhaust recirc gas itself which I think is where the issue is - turbo seals?

I also think given the amount of oil the Provent is capturing, the PCV separator needs replacement.

Yeah to be honest there is a number of (potential) issues with that motor. It is absolutely brilliant in terms of its output but possibly a little too advanced where they haven't ironed out all the issues yet. I dare say that is why there is no diesel option in the T32. I still believe they can last a very long time if you are willing to constantly maintain them above and beyond normal servicing but a 'simpler' engine certainly does have it's appeal.

Re: EGR Valve Cleaning & EGR Related MIL Error Code

Unfortunately it's not going to get any better for any diesel car in the future. With EURO V rules coming into force in Australia in three years, every new diesel car in Australia will have the same technology. This includes the trusty old Landcruiser Prados, Navaras and Patrols.

..And even then, Australia will be behind the times with anti-pollution rules as EURO VI is already in place in Europe.

Bottom line is, the M9R is somewhat ahead of its time but in the future, you won't be able to avoid EGR valves or DPFs. At least, not without doing some highly illegal modifications.

Unless you buy a PB Challenger emoticon

Yeah but hopefully in the future they will figure out how to make this technology/emissions control more reliable.
