The Orange engine light came on so I checked the code once home It advised me there was no turbo boost. The turbo has not suddenly exploded in showers of smoke and oil when turbos usually sh_t them selves, it just lacks any grunt usually provided by the turbo, with the vehicle running ok, just no power. Does this meet the symptoms of a blocked EGR valve? Or is it a new turbo? To remove the actual EGR valve there is 3 bolts on the right hand side. Two are on the top and fairly easy to access. One is on the bottom and fairly difficult to access. There is a small steel pipe in the way. You will need to remove all the bolts from the bracket holding this pipe on. Two are on the front and one on the right side. Once this bracket is loose you should be able to move the pipe out of the way enough to access to the bottom bolt on the EGR valve.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Revhead Kev)Mon, 14 Jun 2021 22:52:30 +0000 Re: EGR Valve Cleaning & EGR Related MIL Error Codehttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2098597,from=rss#post2098597https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2098597,from=rss#post2098597I followed the instructions in the first post to remove the egr valve but could not get the bottom bolt loose. Am doing service/fault finding on my son's T31 diesel XTrail with M9R engine. 130,000 on the clock. K's are mostly suburban with a few Brissy to Rocky return trips. Early in life had DPF issue and needed carbon burnout under warranty. (Weird concept). Has had fair servicing since. I got to do 120,000k service and did most things I could. Oil, air, fuel filters, oil, coolant and the like. After I finished I thought all seemed in good shape. Son bought it back about 8 days later would not pull past 3000rpm. Died on the side of the road. Thought it was a fuel issue for a while but error code check pointed to EGR valve issue. Pulled EGR and inlet manifold. Chocker block with "black lung disease". I mean totally clogged right through to the inlet ports on the head. 5 to 10mm thick. I'm glad I've got a Hilux petrol despite the 14L/100km. I'll post when I get the exy back on the road. Recently got 7l/100 Briz to Byron bay & return with 3 people and 8.5l/100 towing a 600kg camper trailer at 110k for half the trip. Ted, the possible reason for your four EGR failure codes is that you're keeping the revs too low. The EGR valve in any Euro diesel will clog up much quicker if the combustion gases are incomplete and there is a lot of carbon in the exhaust gases. Keeping the revs above 2000 will ensure a higher exhaust gas temperature, more complete combustion and significantly reduce the carbon buildup in the engine. As an example, my 2011 TL Auto has 89,000km on the clock, and since replacing the EGR valve in 2013 at 27,000km it has never missed a beat. Before that I, like you, was trying to keep the revs down by manual shifting it to 6th. My Nissan mechanic - a highly experienced diesel mechanic - said I was doing exactly the wrong thing and that I should let the auto gearbox do the gear selection because it knows better than me as to what gear the engine should be in under the conditions. Since doing that, I rarely, if ever, see a DPF regen, and (touch wood) I've never had a MIL light in over 60,000km of operation. I've said it in this forum many times and I'll say it again...the M9R is NOT a tractor engine. To optimise its performance it must be allowed to rev a little and if you want to optimise its fuel efficiency, you must try keeping the revs over 2,000 or risk carboning up. So Ted, please heed my advice, keep the revs up and don't force the 6th gear. You'll likely regret it in the longterm. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Exywarrior)Sun, 09 Aug 2015 18:32:32 +0000 Re: MIL, EGR and fuel caphttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2088547,from=rss#post2088547https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2088547,from=rss#post2088547In the last 12 months I have had an EGR fault indicated 4 times. I checked the fault number with my $12 Chinese dongle on my laptop in each case. In each case I removed my fuel cap, cleaned the cap edged and the rubber seal with my finger and replaced the cap (2clicks). The MIL continued to show that day However the next day when I cold started the car the MIL did not show and remained off for a couple of months. Therefore I propose that a vast number of the faults reported in this thread were caused by the fuel cap leaking air upsetting the balance in pressures in the intake system and many unnecessary dollars have been ripped from unsuspecting drivers. Next Tom it happens to you, try my solution first and see. On one occasion it took 2 days before the light went off but it always did At 75k my 2009 auto diesel is going better than ever. At the time the dealer told me that a batch of them were faulty and the whole job was done under warranty. I've since done 76,000km and (touch wood) no further issues.I was told the design of the EGR was changed slightly so with the replacement part I should not have any further issues. While it's doubtful that Konazz's issue is at all related to any driving habits in his case (the M9R loves freeways!), advice given to me at the time was that driving habits can definitely have an effect on EGR longevity. Specifically, driving the car like a tractor at low rpm in high gear produces extra soot and can soot up the EGR valve. Overfilling the oil can also affect the EGR as well. But the main advice I was given wasn't ensure that you occasionally put the boot into it and keep the revs up. This keeps the exhaust gas temp up and helps burn off the soot better. The M9R EGR problems are not isolated - this is a frequent problem in other diesel makes and a function of burning what is effectively a light oil in an engine...it will always produce a bit of soot. I use Liqui Moly Diesel Clean and Boost to help increase the fuel burn temp and reduce soot output. But there are plenty of websites out there that will give you good advice on how to reduce soot production, and by taking those steps you'll increase the life of both the EGR and the DPF.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Exywarrior)Thu, 19 Mar 2015 10:11:02 +0000 Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2087246,from=rss#post2087246https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2087246,from=rss#post2087246I'm advised that REGEN takes place without a light on instrument cluster. If it isn't functioning properly and your vehicle is still under warranty, unless there is compelling evidence to suggest misuse or incorrect/insufficient servicing, warranty applies. In case you aren't aware, you DON'T need to have your vehicle serviced at a Nissan dealer to maintain warranty. Providing servicing is conducted by a qualified mechanic and correct specification oils etc are used, warranty cannot be denied. A few years ago one of the manufacturers tried to deny warranty after a vehicle had it's logbook services done at ULTRATUNE. The owner took legal action and the manufacturer lost. Nissan's attitude towards dealers is atrocious, which is in turn reflected in the way the dealers treat customers. Most likely, the dealer is being sneaky and trying to get the cost of repairs paid for by you, so they can charge their workshop hourly labour rate, which is a much higher than the rate Nissan reimburses the dealer. The other scam the dealers run, is charging the owner for "diagnostic" time. If the vehicle is under warranty, fault diagnosis time is paid by Nissan. If reimbursement from Nissan isn't sufficient, that's an issue between the dealer and Nissan, not an excuse to take the easy way out and rip off the vehicle owner. Best of luck and please keep us posted. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Charlie250)Wed, 18 Mar 2015 18:55:37 +0000 Re:https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2087239,from=rss#post2087239https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2087239,from=rss#post2087239Good news and bad news... They started working on the car yesterday. At 10:15am they were still working on it - its now 3 hours later since I called and nothing. I put them on notice that i'll be fighting for a warranty claim so they need to tell nissan whatever they need to tell them. Regardless, I only approved a $120 diagnostic, so anything above that is on them. I also put them in their place, when they said that it just 'happens'... i told them that car has always been serviced at Nissan and its a Nissan problem. Then he said it was like a filter blah blah blah - i think he was taken aback when I explained to him its a butterfly valve, and i know its nothing like a filter... its the engine design (f*cking renault design - our last renault's engine allowed leaves to build up somewhere and set itself on fire). I courteously told them, my problem is not with them - but with Nissan who doesn't like doing warranty repairs. Worst of all, the dealership I limped it to is 98.4km away from home - just outside the 100km towing/hirecar/accomodation limit for Roadside. If i'd had it towed from where I started limping, then I would've been sweet, but alas no reception until Goulburn. I always thought I'd be safe from EGR blockage the way I drive... I'm not going to post what speed I was doing about 15 mins before the limp... but i would've had the car impounded on the spot... I average about 800kms per week, most of it on the Fed/Hume hwy betwee CBR/SYD/Goulburn. I've never even had a DPF burnoff in 106,000kms. I honestly thought about limping it home, but the old girl already has MIL and I'd have to limp it down a 110km/h hwy... and i struggled to get up to 80km/h as I have a full boot of camping gear, fridge, battery etc.)nondisclosed_email@example.com (konazz)Tue, 17 Mar 2015 12:21:42 +0000 Re: EGR Valve Cleaning & EGR Related MIL Error Codehttps://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2087232,from=rss#post2087232https://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/p2087232,from=rss#post2087232Michael, Ask them to show you in the handbook where a particular driving style will cause blockage of the EGR and that it should be avoided. In my opinion, if there is nothing in the handbook to warn you then how would you be expected to know...especially when you play the ignorance card and say it is your first diesel nondisclosed_email@example.com (Revhead Kev)Tue, 17 Mar 2015 11:46:24 +0000
