EGR Valve Cleaning & EGR Related MIL Error Code

Jalal I'm not sure if this has enough detail but you may want to put it in the DIY section later.

I had the day off work so decided to pull apart the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) Valve. Its important to note the difference between the EGR valve and the control valve. The control valve is located at the back of the engine, next to the turbo/air intake. The EGR valve is located at the front of the engine. To see it clearly, you need to remove the plastic engine cover. It just pops off when you give it a pull up.
Image

Next remove the steel and rubber pipes on the right side of the engine that run to the turbo.
Image

At the font of the engine there is 3 electrical plugs. The EGR valve plug is the one on the right as you look at the engine bay. Shown in the middle of this picture
Image

To remove the EGR valve you need to take out the whole section of the EGR system at the front of the engine. Before you begin removing anything, pull out the electrical plugs. There is a rubber pipe at the left end. Remove this first. Should be two steel clamps you can undo with a phillips head screwdriver. Pull off the pipe.

This will expose the oil dip stick pipe. This is secured using two bolts. Undo these and you can remove the top section of the dip stick pipe. Cover the exposed pipe with a rubber glove finger or similar. This will hopefully mean if you drop a bolt it won't end up if your sump.
Image

The above photo also shows the left side of the EGR system. There is 4 very long bolts you need to undo here and two smaller bolts that hold a bracket. You can see one of the longer bolts hanging out in the above photo.

Once these bolts are out you will be able to remove the two sections of the EGR system to the left of the EGR valve.

To remove the actual EGR valve there is 3 bolts on the right hand side. Two are on the top and fairly easy to access. One is on the bottom and fairly difficult to access. There is a small steel pipe in the way. You will need to remove all the bolts from the bracket holding this pipe on. Two are on the front and one on the right side. Once this bracket is loose you should be able to move the pipe out of the way enough to access to the bottom bolt on the EGR valve. You will be able to see the bolt pattern in the pics of the EGR valve below.

Once these 3 bolts are removed you will need to remove the pipe to the bottom of the EGR valve. This is a steel pipe and has 2 bolts at each end.
Image

Once this is done the EGR valve should be loose and you can pull it out. First have a look at the inlet pipe. Mine was very dirty.
ImageImage

Give it a spray with CRC carburetor cleaner or something similar. Use an old toothbrush to clean inside the pipe.

Next have a look at your EGR valve. Mine was filthy after almost 38,000km. I'm amazed it worked at all.
ImageImageImage
ImageImage

Same as the inlet pipe give it a spray and a clean with the old tooth brush. Finished result should be that the valve actually looks like a valve again.
ImageImage

Leave all for a little while to let the carby cleaner evaporate then put it all back together. You're done. Enjoy having a clean EGR valve again and hopefully the better acceleration that goes with it.

Re: EGR Valve Cleaning

This is a good article Toddy. My Nissan mechanic has just told me I have a fairly dirty EGR valve but thankfully he's fixing it so I don't get my hands dirty!!

Seriously though, another thing I've discovered on the internet is this product: Wynns Diesel EGR3.

See the product description HERE.

Image

This seems like a pretty ingenious method of regularly cleaning the entire intake system (including the EGR) with a simple spray. And it's safe on DPF fitted engines.

Thoughts, anyone? And does anyone know if this product is available in Australia?

I've tried to find that stuff everywhere. No joy. If anyone finds out where to get it please let me know.

Re: EGR Valve Cleaning

Yeah Mike I found it on ebay in the UK too but I am yet to find a local supplier. If this stuff does what it's suppose to I can't see why it's not available at all spare parts shops (supercheap etc.)

Todd,
Go to Wynn's website wynns.net and in the right top corner click the Contact Us link where you will be presented with a form page to fill-in to ask them directly if they import it and where the distributors are.

Re: EGR Valve Cleaning

I found the same Ebay site and I've found some really good literature on the stuff as well as some very good feedback from others who have used it.

The document is HERE. Worth a read as it also indicates how it is used as well as some photographs of results in various brands of diesel cars. If the photos are anything to go by then this stuff is fantastic.

It sounds like an outstanding idea - just a little mystified as to why it's so hard to find in Australia.

Re: EGR Valve Cleaning

Hi Toddy,

I wrote to Wynns in Australia and below is my reply.

quote:

Hi Mark,

We do sell EGR3 in Australia; however it is only available to workshops and members of the trade.

Our consumer products are all ‘rip and tip’, in that we like to sell products that can be used by anybody, regardless of knowledge or experience.

Because our EGR3 aerosol requires even a basic knowledge of engine maintenance, we decided not to make it available to the general public. Your nearest Wynn’s authorised service centre will be able to clean your EGR for you.

Regards,

 Joseph Musgrave
Development Chemist

I actually think this is a bit of a cop-out. The instructions for the use of this stuff is well within the means of the average guy who knows a little bit about car engines and car maintenance. But anyway, that was his reply. I was a little disappointed and said so.

Where we could really gain some ground though is that if the EGR valve getting dirty is a problem in the diesel (and my understanding is all Euro diesel cars are susceptible to the problem) then perhaps Nissan should introduce a regular EGR valve cleaning schedule in the service book! Surely that wouldn't be hard and it might reduce the rate of EGR valve failures.

Incidentally my Nissan mechanic has taken the decision to replace my EGR valve (odo: 28000km) and I wasn't surprised to find out that there is nil stock global in Australia....so I have a bit of a wait. But at least I've had absolutely no problem getting it done under warranty and the mechanic is a really nice guy who seems to know one hell of a lot about this engine. He's given me a lot of good tips! One important apparently is that to reduce the EGR valve gungeing up he suggests to not pussyfoot around during acceleration...well for some of us that might be big cultural change right there! More to follow as I learn more from this guy.
