Re: EGR Valve Cleaning
This is a good article Toddy. My Nissan mechanic has just told me I have a fairly dirty EGR valve but thankfully he's fixing it so I don't get my hands dirty!!
Seriously though, another thing I've discovered on the internet is this product: Wynns Diesel EGR3.
See the product description HERE.
This seems like a pretty ingenious method of regularly cleaning the entire intake system (including the EGR) with a simple spray. And it's safe on DPF fitted engines.
Thoughts, anyone? And does anyone know if this product is available in Australia?

Re: EGR Valve Cleaning
Yeah Mike I found it on ebay in the UK too but I am yet to find a local supplier. If this stuff does what it's suppose to I can't see why it's not available at all spare parts shops (supercheap etc.)

Re: EGR Valve Cleaning
Todd,
Go to Wynn's website wynns.net and in the right top corner click the Contact Us link where you will be presented with a form page to fill-in to ask them directly if they import it and where the distributors are.

Re: EGR Valve Cleaning
I found the same Ebay site and I've found some really good literature on the stuff as well as some very good feedback from others who have used it.
The document is HERE. Worth a read as it also indicates how it is used as well as some photographs of results in various brands of diesel cars. If the photos are anything to go by then this stuff is fantastic.
It sounds like an outstanding idea - just a little mystified as to why it's so hard to find in Australia.

Re:
It could be a new product and only available in the UK for now.
You can always freight it over to Australia.

Re: EGR Valve Cleaning
Hi Toddy,
I wrote to Wynns in Australia and below is my reply.
quote: Hi Mark,
We do sell EGR3 in Australia; however it is only available to workshops and members of the trade.
Our consumer products are all ‘rip and tip’, in that we like to sell products that can be used by anybody, regardless of knowledge or experience.
Because our EGR3 aerosol requires even a basic knowledge of engine maintenance, we decided not to make it available to the general public. Your nearest Wynn’s authorised service centre will be able to clean your EGR for you.

I actually think this is a bit of a cop-out. The instructions for the use of this stuff is well within the means of the average guy who knows a little bit about car engines and car maintenance. But anyway, that was his reply. I was a little disappointed and said so.
Where we could really gain some ground though is that if the EGR valve getting dirty is a problem in the diesel (and my understanding is all Euro diesel cars are susceptible to the problem) then perhaps Nissan should introduce a regular EGR valve cleaning schedule in the service book! Surely that wouldn't be hard and it might reduce the rate of EGR valve failures.
Incidentally my Nissan mechanic has taken the decision to replace my EGR valve (odo: 28000km) and I wasn't surprised to find out that there is nil stock global in Australia....so I have a bit of a wait. But at least I've had absolutely no problem getting it done under warranty and the mechanic is a really nice guy who seems to know one hell of a lot about this engine. He's given me a lot of good tips! One important apparently is that to reduce the EGR valve gungeing up he suggests to not pussyfoot around during acceleration...well for some of us that might be big cultural change right there! More to follow as I learn more from this guy.
