Caves to Caves, Southern NSW 14/4/2013

Ok. We've finally got a date that most of us are pretty happy with at this point : Sunday 14th of April 2013.

The plan is to go from Jenolan Caves to Wombeyan Caves via the firetrails: Banshea Rd > Dingo Dell > Colong-Oberon Stock route > Range Fire-trail.

Meet: Jenolan Caves main car park
https://maps.google.com.au/maps?saddr=Jenolan+Caves+Rd&hl=en&ll=-33.821041,150.019727&spn=0.003726,0.00766&sll=-33.821148,150.019735&sspn=0.001863,0.00383&geocode=FT3u-_0dKh7xCA&t=h&mra=prev&z=18
Its 2 hours from Penrith... please leave ample time, as the road into Jenolan needs a lot of caution. From Canberra, best way is through Goulburn > Taralga > Oberon > Jenolan... but its a 3.5h drive.
Time: 9am
Date: Sunday 14 April 2013

The plan:
From Jenolan, the trip will go via the Kanangra Walls lookout, Dingo Dell, cross the Kowmung River (and a few other easier crossings), heading to the Range Firetrail and ending up at Wombeyan Caves. Then its a bee-line to the Hume Hwy (via Mittagong for Sydney-siders or Goulburn for Canberrans).

Being a school night, I'd like to be on our way out of Wombeyan before sunset (which is around 6pm due to loss of day light savings) and have everyone going north near mittagong before dark - as its not the friendliest road. Once on the Hume Hwy... its zoom zoom zoom.

Campers:
For those not wanting to trek up from Sydney to Jenolan on the Sunday morning, I'll be camping in the Kanagra-Boyd national park, at the Boyd River camp ground (only drop toilets). But there are cabins and motels are reasonable prices in Oberon.
For those wanting to make a weekend out of it, my mate Rob and I are heading to Wombeyan-Karst Conservation Reserve to camp on Friday night. Hot showers, camp kitchen and glamping facilities! Then we're going exploring to Yerranderrie and a few other places in the area.

Notes:
Entry into the Kanagra-Boyd National Park requires an NPWS pass. A day pass is $7 (and includes camping fees for Boyd River Camp ground). Not sure if there's an NPWS gate so you can risk not getting one. Remember, all funds from NPWS fees go back into maintaining the parks and wildlife, including and tracks and facilities that we enjoy in paid or free National Parks.

Participants
Konazz (Michael / modified T31 - Tara is tentative, should know by the weekend)
Rob (Konazz's mate / modified BT-50)
Mike (Konazz's mate / standard Jeep wrangler)
Tony (Navara D22)
Griz84 (standard x-trail)
NathanCox (standard x-trail)

Tentatives
ArthurV (Arthur / Prado)
emjayar (Michael / Xtrail)
Rescue1 (Alan/Phillipa / modified T31)

For those coming along, I'll PM you my mobile number closer to the date. Or catch me on UHF26.

Re: Caves to caves???

Definitely interested Michael. Its a very long day mate. last time we met at Mittagong at 8 am and didn't reachJenolan until after 4pm. I dare say if you plan to back track to Yerranderie you will be reaching camp in the dark. Most people who camp do the trip over 2 days. just something to keep in mind. emoticon

Definitely standard x-trail friendly Ben, provided it's dry. In the wet A/T tyres would be the minimum mod. Also a couple of the side tracks (optional) are much rougher. I would suggest bash plates if you wanted to do those too.

Re:

Interesting.

Well if Nissan can fix my DPF issues (after being replaced only 8 days ago and $3000.00 later), then I'd be keen. The first weekend of March (2-3) I can't do as I'm driving to the Gold Coast and back, but after that I should be fine.

Wonder if Arthur is up for this as well? I might even bring the wife as well as the little guy along this time...

Re:

Todd,

I know its a LONG day - especially because of the distance from Canberra or Sydney to the start of the trail (either side).

Rather than rushing through it, I was thinking it could be fun meeting at Wombeyan on Saturday around mid-morning or even getting there around lunch or later (if you need Sat morning errans - its still day light saving) and then driving through to Yerrenderrie and setting up camp/cabins (its only 2h to Yerrenderrie). Depending on the mood, daylight left, etc. some exploring can be had on the way to Yerrenderrie or just go straight there and relax. It would really depend which way the side tracks go from Yerrenderrie: towards Wombeyan or towards Jenolan. Todd should know these emoticon

That way, on Sunday morning, we're smack bang in the middle of it all, and we can do some exploring towards Jenolan, finishing up around 3pm-4pm(?) for those needing to make the trek back to Sydney/Canberra for the dreaded work day monday!

Re: Caves to caves???

That sounds good Michael. I thought you were going to try to do the full track saturday then back track to Yerranderie from Jenolan. That would be an epic long day.
