What is the correct fuel for a T31 ?

I bought a T31 2wd cvt last year and found it runs best on the cheapest fuel. The one time I ran it on 95 it seemed less responsive off the line. A colleague has a dualis Ti which should be the same mechanically yet it says recommended fuel on the cap is 95 or over ! What is going on ?

Re:

Hi Ivan,

Most japanese-built petrol engines don't like the 91 RON dishwater that is our regular ULP in Australia. In Japan, 95 RON is the standard and you will find that running 91RON fuel in your Jap engine will risk carboning up the engine. My last car (a Toyota Avensis Verso GLX) had a jap-built engine and it suffered this very problem....and this was a car that spent most of its life on freeways and highways.
My recommendation is that you run the car on 95 or better. The higher the octane rating the cleaner your engine will run and in the longterm you will get better fuel economy and the injectors will stay clean. I ran my last car on BP Ultimate almost exclusively after the carbon problem and never suffered the problem again.
With petrol or diesel I'm certain that you get what you pay for. If you want good performance and better life from your engine then you need to fork out the extra few cents a litre for the "good stuff".

Ivan, this really should have been posted in the Fuel and Oil section of the forum.
Please use the search function next time as this has most likely been talked about before.

Re: What is the correct fuel for a T31 ?

Ok thanks for the info, it clears it up somewhat. I ran my previous two cars (Citroen C4 VTS and Toyota Seca SX) on premium unleaded exclusively and the difference was obvious the few times I had ran them with the dishwater emoticon The frenchy was particularly unhappy about it. The fuel cap on my X-trail just says "unleaded fuel only" and it definetly ran worse when I filled it up with 95 which confuses me, the response was less instant when i pressed the accelerator but the engine was more quiet. On my colleague's Dualis of the same age says (RON 95/98), same engine under the bonnet isn't it, MR20DE ? Is there such thing as a "fuel quality" sensor?
