Son of Trials Plus 3-4 November
I'm heading down to an event called Son Of Trials Plus on Saturday. It's meant to be a family friendly weekend with some relatively easy 4wd competitions. I'm entering in the 31" class (assuming there will still be spots available on saturday morning when I rock up) and not expecting to be overly competitive but definitely intend on completing all the tracks and showing up a few of the bigger boys.
It's $40 per person entry if you want to come watch and another $40 if you want to compete. Alternatively it's $50 if you want to camp there all weekend. Be great to see other X-trails down there even if you have no intention of competing.
For everyone that did the caves to caves trip, you would have pretty much driven straight past this place whilst driving along Wombeyan Caves Road.

Re:
A bit short notice Todd and looking at the list of Gold Sponsors one of them is a partner for our forum too (Sutherland Shire Off Road), so we could have got a special "attendance permission" had I known about this earlier.
Anyway, have fun and show the big boyz what the exy can do

Re: Son of Trials Plus 3-4 November
Only got my navigator organised yesterday. So I couldn't even confirm my attendance before then. That's why it's short notice.
Would have liked to tell everyone about this much earlier and especially would have liked to see if we could organise some sort of "attendance permission".

Re: Son of Trials Plus 3-4 November
My navigator just pulled out. Don't suppose anyone here is interested? It would be an early Saturday start and aim to finish around mid arvo.

Re: Son of Trials Plus 3-4 November
Just got home. Ended up going solo. No navigator meant I couldn't do a couple of the tracks.
Basically learnt a few things:
1. This event is not suitable for X-trails. The info I got was way off.
2. My new clutch/flywheel has made a huge difference to my car off road.
3. I'm pretty sure my snorkel has helped the low revs torque. Don't have to be anywhere near the peak torque range to climb steep hills anymore.
I had a go at 3 of 8 tracks but could only complete 2 of them. The 3rd included driving up the river over head sized rocks/boulders.
The tracks in between events were difficult enough. To get to one event there was a 40m wide river crossing that was approx 600-700mm deep with a very rocky bottom and a steep sandy entry. Bigger 4wds were getting stuck on the exit. All this wasn't even an event. I got through all that OK. Anyway as I was by myself I don't really have any action photos. So the below will have to do.
Moral of the story, don't even think about an event like this in an X-trail. You will either waste your time or come out with a broken car.

Re:
Maybe they need to make that a bit more clearer in their advertisements, "not suitable for SUVs!"!

Re: Son of Trials Plus 3-4 November
Jalal I actually asked the question. This is the response I got
Hi Todd, Stock standard, unmodified vehicles can enter and complete all the tracks with ease. It's more about driver skill than vehicle capabilities. With the mods to your X-Trail, you should be fine. Kind regards, Son of Trials Committee Nissan Patrol 4WD Club of NSW & ACT Inc. www.nissanpatrolclub.org
I was talking to some guys from another 4x4 forum one of whom was running a stock Triton. He was getting hung up on rocks and dragging his diffs all over the place. It's not suitable for stock 4x4's at all. The info I was given by the people organising the day was just wrong.
