Transfer Case Rear Seal Replacement ?

I have had some strange noises coming from under the Xtrail the last couple of weeks which has gradually gotten worse (more persistent, not louder) and reading the ESM I found the #1 cause of noise from the transfer case is listed as low fluid level so I went under for a look.
Seems there is a possible oil leak from the rear transfer case seal where the driveshaft to the rear wheels exits.

Just put in some more fluid and it took 300ml without any leaking out of the filler hole (capacity is supposed to be 310ml) so it looks like it was a little dry emoticon
Cleaned it all up with degreaser underneath so through the week I will see if the noise has gone and if there is any more leakage to confirm the seal needs replacing.

Now ... question is, if the seal has gone, is it something easily done DIY or best taken to a specialist ?
Looking at the ESM it seems as though the whole pinion gear needs to be removed from the transfer casing to replace the rear seal emoticon

Re:

Should be fairly easily done Kev if your pretty good on the tools. By what your description says it is very similar to a diff seal being replaced on a live axle.
Can you throw a breakdown pic up so I can have a look at the internals please.

Re:

Looks pretty straight forward Kev.
The flange is the only think you really need to take off as the seal is mounted to it.
The only drama you might have is separating the pinion from the flange.

Re: Transfer Case Rear Seal Replacement ?

I think that is why they suggest to remove the whole pinion assy and then press the pinion out from the flange.
By the looks of it if the nut holding the flange on is screwed onto the end of the pinion then the flange should come off ok...just not sure about the colapsable spacer

Re:

I think the collapsible spacer is just another name for a crush sleeve. If you mark the pinion nut before removing it and count the revolutions then just replace with the same amount of turns so it would be the same as before.

Re: Transfer Case Rear Seal Replacement ?

Well the noise is still there and a "new oil" smell after a drive has developed so it seems like both the seal and the bearing will need replacement...so it's off to Nissan for some parts and then see a friendly mechanic to help me with the bearing replacement I think.

Re:

The bearing wouldn't be hard to replace Kev, you can use a grinder to cut it off then use a tube socket the same size as the bearing to put it in place on the pinion.
Just start on a Friday so if you need to visit a mechanic you can on a Saturday.

Good luck.

Re: Transfer Case Rear Seal Replacement ?

Well it seems I have found the cause of the transfer case seal and bearing trouble...

Image

Looks like a torn lower engine mount has caused additional loading on the transfer case bearing. Guess it is going to be a little more work than I thought.

Wish Nissan service did a proper job...they would have found this earlier before it damaged the transfer case bearing if they did I think.

Re:

Looks like the mount can be removed Kev, just a matter of finding a machine shop to press out the old mount and press in the new one.
Always the way when you think you have only one thing to do.
