Re:
Good article but the problem is, how do you know what the wharfies did when loading and unloading the Xy's on ships.
After the 10 - 30 kms already on the clock when purchased new the bedding procedure is too late.

Re:
Rotors are a consumable part that wears out, just like brake pads and tyres. You cannot expect pads and rotors to rub together without both wearing over time. I do agree that warped rotors at 20-40,000km isn't good enough.
Rotors warp due to heat build up, which is indicative of either very hard driving or that the rotors aren't up to the job. Machining the rotor, (which makes it thinner) is a bad idea, as it isn't fixing the issue.
You would be far better off, saving the cost of machining & putting that money into buying better rotors like DBA slotted or Slotted & Cross Drilled. Slotted rotors dissipate heat, far more effectively than standard rotors do and very rarely if ever warp. I've had DBA slotted rotors on my last 3 cars. They are brilliant compared to standard rotors.
The reality is, that most standard rotors are rubbish, made from soft and thin material, & built down to a price. Eg The Falcon and Territory have been plagued by warped rotors for years.
Back in the days of the EF/EL Falcon, NSW Police used to put DBA Slotted Rotors and Bendix Ultimate pads on the XR-8 Hwy Patrol cars during fit out before being operationally deployed. These days, the NSW XR-6 Turbo Police Pack includes a nice set of Brembo's. Why, because once fitted out with all the police crap and 2 coppers an XR-6 Turbo is pretty close to 2 ton and standard brakes can't cope.
An X-Trail is no lightweight either. The diesel is close to 1.7t which is lineball with a Falcon. Once you add the weight of any accessories you put on it plus yourself and a full tank of fuel, then 1.8t will be a minimum weight. Put in a 2 or 3 passengers and some gear in the boot, suddenly 2 ton is easilly realised.
You should by now be beginning to understand just how much work the brakes and rotors have to do to pull you up.
Based on what I've already seen and heard about the factory rotors, one of the first things I'll be doing to our Exy on delivery is throwing the factory rotors in the bin and having DBA slotted rotors put on the front. At approx $140 a rotor, it's a very cheap safety upgrade, especially when compared to the overpriced factoy rotor which is know to be crap.

Actually, they weren't too thin, that is why their first machining with the pad replacement was thrust upon me.

Re:
Hi Guys,
I was cleaning the alloy wheels this morning when I noitced something unusual on the surface of the rotors and guess what it turned out to be when I touched it?
Cracks!!!
Yes, 3 of out of 4 rotors have surface cracks on them, one of the rear rotors the cracks are pretty much noticeable as soon as you look at the rotor, the other 2 are not so bad.
I jumped in the car and drove it straight to the local dealership who also looked at it with a tourch and confirmed that they are definitely cracks, but they werent sure if it's cracks in the surface/glazing or if the cracks went all the way through, so due to safety concerns they have asked me to leave the car with them and they will take off and inspect all rotors and see what's wrong.
According to them, they have never seen such cracks only on race cars and I am sure as hell I wasn't racing in the Red Bull.
This may further prove the bad quality of the rotors, but cracks are a completely different matter that is much serious than anything else I have seen before!
I'll keep you psted.

Re:
It could be the glazing on the disc that is starting to crack.
I wonder if they will change them under warranty if the rotors have cracks in them.
Rotors are not covered as a warranted item and will probably blame you for riding the brakes.

Re:
They called me and Nissan asked the dealer to take photos of the brake pads and ask me 2 questions:
* Have I noticed the car was riding the brakes? My answer is no, it's driving normally as it should and there has been no burning smell at all.
* Has the car been left parked for an extended period of time? My answer is no, the car is being driven everyday.
The dealer is sending photos of the pads and they said they look normal to them and the way they should look after 15,000kms (on the car's clock), so will forward this information to Nissan tomorrow and seek replacement of all 4 rotors under warranty.

Re:
You were right Tony.
The response from Nissan (technical department) came back saying that rotors are not a warranted item and this is normal wear and tear and nothing to be concerned about. If I wanted I could get them machined at my cost.
I am contacting Nissan Australia head-office about this now, as I didn't want to cause any waves and thought the process would take its course without any "pressure" from my side....
P.S. The dealer doesn't agree with the ruling and thinks that all 4 rotors should be replaced under warranty given the very low mileage. There are no front rotors in Australia at all and they would need to be imported from Japan!
