T31 Series 4 Front Brake Rotors

Hey guys, just thought i'd share this experience with you all. Last May, (2011) i purchased the series 4, 2WD X-trail as my work car. I have now clocked up 61,000km.
My issues started around 35,000km with the front brakes starting to shudder, so i put with this until my 40,000km service. I mentioned this to the service dealer and they machined the rotors for me, as they said they had worn abnormally, by 2°. I didn't think much of it, until it started to happen again at 55,000km.
Again i put up with it, until i could get the car into the dealer to be looked at again. Much to my amazement, i was told this afternoon that the rotors had to be replaced. Further, i was told that this would be a $520 cost. I must admit, my reaction was not the most pleasant, but i was able to get the rotors fitted for $154. Not a bad saving considering.

I'd be interested to know if there are other owners out there that have had the same issues. I would have at least expected the rotors to have lasted about 150,000km, or am i living in a fantasy land??

The X Trail rotors appear to be made from a softer grade steel and seem to wear out rally quick.
Have a read in the existing thread to see how quickly they wear out?

Many members have opted for the slotted rotors which are cheap to buy coupled with Bendix pads to get a better braking combination.

I actually can't wait for my rotors to wear out, so I can replace them with the slotted ones and Bendix pads like I had in my T30, as I know that the quality and durability of the Nissan rotors is not all that great and it only take to drive through a puddle with hot rotors ones for them to get damaged.

Check THIS thread for alternatives.

Re: T31 Series 4 Front Brake Rotors

I'm a bit disappointed to find that prior posts indicate that the rotors on this new car are designed to be rubbish with designed failure at 1/4 of expected life - even if you are both careful and lucky.

As I've mentioned previously, I had come to expect at least 200,000 Km from original pads and a lifetime from rotors.

I will be very peeved if mine do not make that baseline.

Perhaps it is time Nissan took a leaf from the Honda book and replaced things because they did not measure up to a Standard, thereby gaining Face and Kudos for being pro-active, rather than lose Face by denying the existence of cheap solutions and inadequate engineering.

Failing rotors at 30-40,000 Km bespeak bad engineering and cheap/shoddy components.

For Nissan, the options are: Fix it now and increase Face by being pro-active , or else ignore the problem until the mass of unhappy customers forces you to fight the bad publicity, loss of faith and loss of sales of all models by expensively and reluctantly, being forced by Australian 'expected use " Law to do what you should have done in the first instance...

Big loss to the Nissan brand name. Easily fixed with positive outcomes all round by fitting a better replacement under warranty.

Re: T31 Series 4 Front Brake Rotors

I am glad that I am not alone.

I had my 30k service late last month. Before the x trail went in for its service everything was fine. Two days after the service I first notice that I am getting the judders from the brake pedal.

The Nissan dealer has since confirmed that the rotors are warped and that it is down to fair wear and tear. The rotors were inspected, photos taken and a report passed to Nissan Aust for their attention. Within an hour Nissan Aust (tech dept) claim that the defect was not a manufactures defect and was due to fair wear and tear.

I agree with previous posts that this is a poor excuse for a poor product. I drive and brake like Miss Daisy and I am far from happy with the life of these rotors. I have protested to Nissan and the issue is now with the Warranty dept for adjudication. I feel that if Nissan do not accept some responsibility for this problem then I must take this further out of principle.

Re: T31 Series 4 Front Brake Rotors

Rotors wearing out that quickly sounds quite abnormal. Manufacturers are leaning towards softer compounds these days to increase performance (artificially) and reduce the chance of noise (squeal).

I had a '97 commodore that was machined twice in the first 20,000kms and the dealer swapped them out no questions asked.

Having said all that, the expected wear comes down to driving conditions and style (early light braking v hard late braking). Dogtrail is getting exception wear from pads to get 200,000kms out of a set! I presume there's a lot of highway driving, little towing, and a manual gearbox involved to get figures like that emoticon

We've only got 25,000kms on ours, but no sign of brake issues at all emoticon

He won't get any where near that even if he doesn't use the brakes in an X trail. lol

Re: T31 Series 4 Front Brake Rotors

Unfortunately Cooch and Mfeodoroff are probably right so 200,000 Km may be a very long bow to draw for these brakes.

As my early cars had skinny drum brakes all round, I learned very quickly that heat was the natural enemy of braking performance and longevity so it became ingrained to conserve that rather necessary resource by predictive driving.

Consequently I became used to 200,000 Km lifespans on the subsequent disc brake improvements. (Edit: for my Honda's and Subaru's. )

I still shake my head in wonderment when I'm behind people who ride the brakes all the way down a long hill. In my youth that habit would quickly leave you with no brakes at all and most of the hill yet to come.

Times have changed...

Re: T31 Series 4 Front Brake Rotors

I have just read an article (link below) which may go some way to explain a few things. In my case my style of driving and braking may be a contributing factor.
Since I identified the problem a number of mechanics (not Nissan) have suggested a few techniques to restore the rotors without machining and this seems to corroborate the suggestion in the link on going through the process to "re bedding in the rotors and pads". I will give it a go and see what happens.

Re: T31 Series 4 Front Brake Rotors

jtr648, what an excellent article: - should be "required reading"!

Perhaps I will get my usual 200,000 Km as that 'break-in' method described is my normal pattern of braking.

Even when coming to a complete halt, I dislike the last second 'grab' of warm brakes, so always release the pedal to roll forward to the stop point - then only apply enough pressure to hold it at that point.

That may explain why (in 40+ years of driving, I have only ever had one a set of discs (or drums) machined.

At the time, they were not 'pulsing' or showing any undesirable behaviour, so I suspect that I was 'oversold' in that instance in 1985.

If the Nissan rotors continue to dismally fail under what passes for normal driving, perhaps a Rockwell test of metal hardness on failed rotors with comparison to other Manufacturers rotors for comparable vehicles might shed some light on the problem?

The chances of finding the Nissan supplied pads to be 'too hard' is diminishingly small. emoticon

Edit: even then, it would be a 'fault' as the pads would be harder than the rotor:- wrong way around for engineering.

However, I see soft rotors as planned obsolescence. Not valid under Australian consumer laws.
