Low and rough idling after cylinder head changed

I have this rough idling around midway especially w/o aircond but higher idling at 900 +- with aircond. When in Neutral or Park mode, idling is fine. Car runs fine. This came about after head changed due to crack. Ignition coil No.3 changed new as its misfiring.
I'm suspecting cat.converter 1 (below intake manifold) as to this cause (if its ever related to idling) or am I totally wrong? The cat.conv 2 is also having some cringing sound of which I have had a look and its some small marble thingy that's bumping around. Will take out the cat.converter to "pour" out the remnants. I am very curious and worried about the so-called flaky thing from the cat.converter that will damage the engine.
Please help and am I too worried? Thanks in advance.

Look in the exhaust section of the forum where you find all the info a and diagnosis for your problem.
Please use the search function before starting a new thread to avoid duplication of topics.

Sorry if I have duplicated the topics but I have already used the search function and searched thru exhaust, technical and also mechanical problems but didnt find anything quite related as to my post.
As a matter of fact, I've been lurking this forum for almost 2 years before I registered as a member yesterday.
I just needed to know if its related to cat.converter and if so I'll just change it.

Re:

Is the car misfiring, should be pretty obvious from the exhaust - puffing like a WRX and smoky.

I know when I got my head back on, one of the sparkplugs had its gap closed right up to about 0.5mm from the normal 1.1mm and was causing misfires. Pretty clear from the exhaust something was wrong, originally thought it was a dud ignition coil but then checked the plug.

If the cat has material in it flaking off get rid of it quick smart. Too much engine damage reported from cat breakdown. Look through the O2 sensor boss weld or take the whole manifold off. I have replaced my cat with a SS hiflow model in the midpipe, no chance of breaking down now.

Other thing to try is the IAVL procedure or whatever you call it - search around for that but possibly after the head change you may need to relearn the idle position. I ran the procedure after I got everything back together just to be sure and everything idles at the right speed now after fixing up the plug gaps

Re: Low and rough idling after cylinder head changed

Hello DJR9000 and thanks for yr info. Mine didnt puff and spark plugs were changed new. I'm trying to figure out if the cat converter has any effect to idle speed but anyhow if its giving way I'll change asap. Will try to upgrade to stainless steel for hassle free future. will also look into O2 sensor as it's possibly related as has happened to my ex-CRV but that has symptoms of jerking and reluctantly picking up speed.
What is JAVL? Mine is a 2 litre model and is the idle learning procedure applicable?

Re: Low and rough idling after cylinder head changed

When the head was changed the throttle body would have had to be removed.
It could have happened that the butterfly valve was moved manually when this happened and so the Idle-Relearn should be done.

Yes as you have a T30 the procedure should be the same.

If it is doing this you could also need to replace the cam and crank angle sensors. Nissan sell these as a kit of both of them, the crank one has a white dot painted on it. I paid about $90 inc postage from a dealer here for the genuine model. But if it was the CR-V then don't worry obviously

For the O2 sensor have a look, a direct fit dropin is NTK OZA544-N7, this was exactly the same model fitted as genuine in my case, otherwise a Bosch universal LS07 sensor can be used but needs a little wire fiddling as you need to use the old plug - the Bosch one comes with a crimping plug to let you use the same model between lots of different cars and is a bit cheaper than a straight replacement like the NTK or genuine. O2 sensor should be the same between 2.0 and 2.5 models

Edit: of course if you have 2 cats you also have 2 O2 sensors so double check the fitment and parts, the bosch universal type may just work though

Re: Low and rough idling after cylinder head changed

Ok thanks for the great advise. Cam sensor was changed 3 months back but not too sure about crank angle sensor. Will definitely have a look at both sensors. After all car is already 8 years old.
Way to go for this forum site. Am happy to be a part of this.
