Re:

Sam, have you taken it to a dealer to see if there are any fault codes?

Maybe it's just me, but I have given up fiddling under the bonnet any more and I'd just as soon have a Nissan mechanic look at it. Chances are you could bark up the wrong tree for ages when the problem is staring you in the face. But then again I lease the car and don't really care about the repair costs....

Another thought is whether you received a bad batch of fuel or got a bit of water in it. If it's cold where you live it could be easy to accumulate condensate in the fuel.

Re:

its a little harder getting it to a dealer now with the hours I work, so that is why im trying to trouble shoot myself.
Yes I have second thoughts of them changing/replacing parts sometimes when it says they lube the door hinges and when I have a look at it I cant see any fresh lube there...even with my glasses on.

its normal Sydney weather where I am and the car is always in the garage at night so dont think it would be the condensation. I usually go to 2 or 3 petrol stations to fill up and havent had any issues in the last 4yrs.

No issues today, so hopefully the issue is resolved. If it does happen again this week I will make an effort to take it into a dealer to have it looked at

ill keep you posted

If the water got into the engine, Samuel will be a bit more worried than just a rough idle.

Re:

It happened again this morning for part of the way to work, no issues on the way home.

What is everyones thoughts, take it to a dealer, or run the fuel right down (about 3/4 tank) and refill and see if it is a bad batch of fuel??

Re:

A fluctuating engine with symptoms that come and go would tell me that it would be worth eliminating the more obvious first. I think filling it with a clean batch of fuel might be a start. I have a Series 4 TL and wherever possible I use only BP Ultimate Diesel or Caltex Vortex diesel. And I always avoid the small independents - you never know where they get their diesel from or what they add to it.
At least if you can confirm that it isn't fuel then you can start looking at the more complex possibilities.

Re:

Bleed the fuel line a little and see if there is any water.

Mine sounded a little sick last year and we got about 200ml of water/fuel mix before it went to straight diesel of out the little bleed outlet in the engine up near the drivers side shocky top bolt.

I wouldn't drive it far without checking that, just in case.

I though I didn't get any bad fuel, but humidy got me in the end with condensation. This can happen in winter as well.

Re: Re:

Bleed the fuel filter - suggest running some silicone hose from the bottom to a glass so you can see what comes out.

Most diesel is pretty clean - it's the moisture/water content that is the killer.

Do you only notice the rev change when idling or is there any hesitation say at 80-90km/hr.

Does the engine sound like it's about to stall and then recovers?

Re:

I only use Caltex diesel. I stopped using independant petrol stations when my dad had to rebuilt his hilux petrol motor as it had water in piston #2. The mechanic and my dad suspect it was the fuel from the independant stations although cant prove it.

Im not that mechanically inclined to bleed lines and stuff like that. If someone here is offering, ill take them up on the offer...im sure we can come to some agreement about payment!

By the way can someone tell me where the fuel filter is located to see if they replaced it at the 40K service?

Re: Re:

There are a few threads about the filter - it's immediately in front of the RH McPherson strut mount - there is a small rubber (priming) bulb and then the filter in a metal bracket with three quick connect type fuel lines entering and exiting the top. The drain is underneath the filter.

It would be hard to tell if it is replaced at the service - only way is to scratch some marks onto it to ensure it is done the next time.

If you had water in the system you would know. I aaked a couple of questions in my previous response which if you can get a handle on, might point us in the right direction.

Re:

You should know where it is Samuel, we fitted the strut bar together you and I and we talked about that little fuel hand pump that connects to the fuel filter emoticon
