Re: Re:
The treadwear rating for the tyres certainly provides a good guide as to longevity but it's only rough as there are many other factors involved.
Harder wearing tyres tend to be a harder compound and just like in race cars, harder compounds tend to sacrifice a little bit of grip to give you the extra long life. Soft compound tyres will give you plenty of grip but won't last long.
But any tyre's life can be quickly eroded by rough driving habits, hard braking, poor wheel alignment, hard cornering, etc, or simply not regularly checking the tyre pressures. An under-inflated tyre will wear out very quickly, as will tyres that aren't frequently rotated.
In the X-Trail, the front tyres (as per any other front wheel drive car) will wear faster than the rear tyres. So they really MUST be rotated at least every 10,000km.
I would also advise to completely disregard the placarded tyre pressures as well - they are way too soft for highway driving. I keep mine at 35psi minimum, front and rear.
Those who turn the steering wheel in a parking lot whilst stationary are also wearing out the tyres faster - I always try to put just a little bit of motion on the car before turning the steering. All these little things help.
I've read people with Cooper CS4s (supposedly with a 80000km warranty) getting less than 30,000km out of them. I've heard others that get up to 100,000km.
Tyre life is far more than just the treadwear factor - it's really about how much the owner really cares for the tyres and drives in such a way as to get long life from them.
All the above is why I am at 60,000 on my original-fit Dunlop 7000s and in my last two cars I used to average 70,000km out of each tyre set.

Re:
Just thought I'd now mention my original fit Dunlop 7000s are now approaching 65,000km old and still going. And still legal!
I reckon they might get me close to 70,000, although the rears (that were until recently the fronts) are going to be touch and go...
Might be visiting my local tyre dealer pretty soon.

Re:
Well after 67,000km, my original fit Dunlop 7000s have finally reached the end of their life - accelerated by me taking out a garden bed with the left rear and leaving a big deep gash in the sidewall that I'm not too keen to take on the freeways.
So I'm getting brand new Cooper CS5s on Thursday. But I have to say that the 7000s have served me very well.
