Has my T30 Ti X-Trail gone to 'god'? - Rev counter fail, engine warning light, 4wd light locked

Hi there - hoping you can help with some engine/transmission/something big issues that has just emerged this morning.

Had to take the car for a drive 45km to pakenham in light morning traffic, mainly along the major road and freeway. On way back I noticed that the revs dial wasn't working; about 10km later the car stalled at a set of lights - managed to get it going simply but now the engine warning light was on and the 4WD light on the dash also on (it doesn't go off no matter which dash button I push related to 2wd/auto/lock).

Have coaxed it the 5km home. Car will not now start and warning lights remain on.

2003 ti t30
175,000ks on the clock
Fully and regularly serviced

Tried:
To not play with anything I have no clues about
Oil level seems fine, looks clear
Transmission fluid seems fine, didn't smell, but as car wasn't running I couldn't check level

Has this great little car just gone to the car yard in the sky? Any suggestions regarding what I should do next (i.e who should I get to look at it so I don't experience the results of a dealer with kids in Private school needing fees paid) would be appreciated

Marcus :-)

Re:

have you counted the engine warning light flashes to see what is the error code it has giving you? If not, head over to the DIY Guides section of the forum and look-up the "engine MIL light" error code reading procedure.

Once we know what the error code is we'll be able to give you a more accurate answer.

Hi there Jalaski. I downloaded the PDF and tried working my way through the pump accelerator five times, wait 10 seconds etc procedure it explained but nothing lit up or flashed on the dash anywhere

Unless I'm looking at the wrong spot for the MIL/SES light?

Re:

Your timing isn't accurate, so try a again with a watch. The engine check light itself will blik a number if times (the orange shape of an engine)

This sounds like a faulty Crank Angle sensor as these symptoms were experienced by other members here

Because the 4WD controller also senses engine speed from the ECU then this could be a side-effect of the Crank Angle sensor problem above.

My suggestion is to get one from Nissan spares and replace it if you are handy with tools by following the same thread from here for 2 pages with the pics or get a mechanic to replace it if you are not confident following those descriptions

I agree with Kev. Those are almost the identical symptoms to when my sensor failed in my old T30. Got mine replaced by lube mobile for roughly $350.

Hi all and thanks for the replies. Here's the update

As Kev suggested, it was indeed the Crank Angle Sensor. I spoke to our mechanic yesterday on the phone (Grant at GS&M Automotive in Seaford) and explained the problem. He said the same thing and said I should take it into Nissan to get a diagnostic done on it. Told him the car wouldn't start and I figured that as I'd have to get it towed, might as well tow it to him. Sure enough, Crank Angle Sensor faulty and replaced and all good. Even timed it close enough to have the full service done at the same time!

Thanks for everyone tipping in with thoughts as to likely issues.

Safe motoring everyone
Marcus

Re:

Hey Marcus.
You can do a diagnostic at home to check what the error codes are.
Here is the link.
