Re: Caves to Caves Forum Trip 2012
What i want to know is where on the front of the vehicle do you attach the snatch strap i know on the passengers side their is a place to screw that supplied bar into .So where on the drivers side do you attach and do you attach to that bar on the passengers side.Info will help others who have not tried this yet. While we are on the subject where on the back do attach i was going to buy one of those attachments that slide into the tow bar area ?

Re: Caves to Caves Forum Trip 2012
We used the screw in eyelet to winch on this occasion. I would be less confident snatching as it's more of a tow point than a snatch point. I assume you own a T31 and have this eyelet. There is no other front recovery point. This is discussed in detail in other threads.
The tow bar is definitely the recovery point of choice at the rear but we didn't use it this time around. The hitch mount recovery point is a great idea. I would definitely recommend one.

Re:
This question is better asked in the towing and recovery section of the forum.
For the T31, you can only use the designated towing point on the passenger side. You can't use any of the tie-down points for recovery and I don't think the T31 has any of them at the front anyway.
The safest recovery point at the rear is the towbar itself and there are towbar attachments available which slide into the receiver hitch and give the perfect recovery point.

Excellent trip guys and lovely pics, however it is sad to see some damage caused to vehicles in this outing and I believe this is the first incident we ever had in a forum organised outing. Lucky it's nothing serious.
There should have been a communication to all participants to select the correct 4WD setting....etc before tackling a specific challenging section. This information would have been valuable for new owners as well.
Something to keep in mind for future outings I guess.

Re:
Jalal,
Dave was the first up the hill so it was a bit hard to know what it was like, things happened the way they did because he stopped half way up the hill and then tried to get up again resulting in the downhill slide into the tree.
better a small dent in the tailgate than a smashed window, there was only 1 cm till it hit the glass.

Was Dave leading the convoy? If not, why did he go first?

Re: Caves to Caves Forum Trip 2012
Jalal I dare say the couple of side tracks we did were more challenging than most of what has been done on forum trips before. Dave went first because after we crossed the creek I pulled over to give specific instructions on the coming hill climb. I waved Dave up to give it plenty of right foot up the climb. Unfortunately he lost momentum and ended up going side ways.
Before we even tried this section I gave everyone a briefing on how steep the climb out would be and gave everyone the option to leave their car behind if they didn't want to risk damage.
I'm disappointed that you are passing judgement without even being there. I'm sure no one who was there blames me for any of the recoveries and/or damage.

Re:
Sorry Todd,
Am not passing judgment at all, but a convoy formation needs to remain in place for the duration of the trip to avoid such incident or more serious ones and if anyone decides to break formation during an outing, they're out of the convoy for good.
Am sure you guys had radios with you and could have alerted Dave or anyone else breaking formation that they need to wait for the trip leader to explore the section ahead first.
I know some owners can get excited and decide to shoot through, but these are some of the basics of an organised forum outing and one of the basic rules that must be understood by all participants.
P.S. The difficulty of the track is irrelevant to what am saying.

Re: Caves to Caves Forum Trip 2012
The convoy remained except that I jumped aside to give instructions. Once at the top of the Hill I re-took the lead. I instructed Dave to carry on up the hill. No one broke formation except me to make it easier to give instructions. The section ahead didn't need exploring as I was familiar with it. It was a simple error of not quite enough momentum that caused the incident.
