Was just at the beach for about 45min, I tried holding the ESP off button for 10secs as Tony suggested, the light come on at first then went out, but once I got into soft sand the slip light came on, so I turned the engine off then on, then just pressed the ESP off button once so the light stayed on, the slip light never came on again and the Xtrail went really well, never once did I get my friends, Maxx and Traxx, out to help.

NO, I didn't think it did work.
With the 10sec rule the slip light came on in soft sand, without the 10sec rule, just pressing the button once so the esp off light was on, the slip light never came on at all.

Re: Removing Traction Control?

Guys,

press ESP OFF button. Then Hold it for cca. 10 seconds. Light switch OFF but ABSD traction controll etc is off as coach t31 adviced - due to safety reasons, turn off ignition and start engine again when back on road. It saved my life in deep mud few times.

Regards,
Peter

Then why when I tried the 10sec rule I had the slip light come on, which to me means that the ESP is still working, and when I only pressed it once so the ESP off light was on the slip light never came on, which means the ESP is off.
Will go out again tommorrow and to try again.

Re:

I thought the slip light only meant that the wheels have lost traction, excessive slip.
Just because the ESP is off doesn't mean that the slip light won't come on.
You'll need to have diff locks front and rear for the slip light not to come on.

Re:

Ok, I went out to the beach again today, now using the 10sec rule the slip light came on often and when it did I think it activate the traction control/blsd, I could hear and feel the brakes pulsing and I lost moment and bogged down, I stopped restarted the car, just pressed the ESP OFF button once and got going again without too much trouble.
I tried going up a large sand hill/dune, 1st just pressing the ESP OFF button once so the ESP OFF light was illuminated and I went straight up, then tried again using the 10sec rule, the slip light was flashing and I could only get half way up, if I was lucky, before bogging down, again it felt like the brakes were pulsing, traction control/BLSD were active.
I tried a few times with more of a run up with the same results.
I went for more of a run around the beach with the ESP OFF button just pressed once, light illuminated and the Xtrail went well.
This is my experience on the beach, keen to hear what other people think.
I won't be using the 10sec rule on the beach again.
Just as a side note I really got stuck on the way out, went to close to the side slope of a dune in very very soft sand, using Maxx traxx 5 or 6 times and only advancing a car length at a time with the back slidding a little down hill each time, not a good feeling, lesson learnt.

Re: Removing Traction Control?

Today we had rain all the day, so after work I went with my familly to countryside for the weekend. I've tested it again in deep MUD - and here is the result:

1. just switch ESP off - traction control light stayed off, but all safety systems worked... You know typical sound, car hardly rolling >-)

2. switched ESP OFF... pressed and hold ESP OFF button till ESP off light dissapeared. Wow, I have completly #$%%$@ my car by MUD as all wheels were spining with full torque. I have observed also that ABS was not working as I was sliding when pushed brake hard without any help from ABS...

I have European version T31 - September 2007 - diesel AT

All the time I had 4 WD engaged..

@ Cooch T31 - can you just test and confirm?

Re:

After reading Peter's reply I'm thinking maybe I'm doing it wrong, this is how I did it,

start car
press and hold ESP Off button,
ESP Off light comes on then after about 10sec it goes out
release ESP off button.

or is this how everyone else is doing it

start car
press and release ESP off button
ESP off light comes on
then press and hold ESP Off button again untill it goes out, about 10secs.
release ESP Off button.

Please let me know which method is right
Thanks.

I have just been re-reading some older threads here,
http://baustralianxtrail.runboard.com/t125861,offset=70
which seem to echo my experience with the 10sec rule.
