Caves to Caves Winter Run 16 June 2012

Image

Hi All, plenty of notice this time. I'm thinking about leading a caves to caves trip probably in June. Just wanting to gauge interest at this stage. We will probably just do a day trip as it should be freezing cold by that stage. I'm leaning towards the weekend of 9-10 or 16-17 and I'm not fussed whether its a Saturday or Sunday.

I've done the southern half of this trip from Wombeyan Caves to the Kowmung River crossing, however, I haven't done the section north of this to Jenolan Caves. For this reason I would love to have someone on board who has done the full trip previously. More to brief everyone on what to expect than provide directions (GPS should sort that).

Also I would really like to do a couple of the side trips I did recently. See Upper and Middle Werong Fire Trails
Caves Trip report
a couple of these would require a lift and some protection underneath and probably A/T tyres. If you don't have these mods please feel free to come along anyway and maybe you can jump in someone else's car for this section (should be less than 1 hour).

As it will be a day trip (unless there is a group that is happy to camp by themselves) I would plan on an early start (say 7am at Mittagong). This does seem early but bear in mind we will run out of light by 5pm at that time of year.

Anyway feel free to post here if you're interested and of course if you'd like to volunteer your previous experience.

Warning message

If you haven't already done so, please read and acknowledge THIS post.

OK we have a date. We will meet at Mittagong maccas (corner of bowral road and bessemer road) at 7am on Saturday 16 June.

Great, count me in as tentative Todd.
All depending on if any gigs fall under the night before we go.

Should be a good one.

Re: Caves to Caves Winter Run

Hi Todd.
I am replying from Hoi An in Vietnam but will be back in Oz from May onwards. I am definitely interested in attending but have not driven the roads/tracks before.
Hope you get a good response. I might even consider camping at Boyd River crossing in the Kanangra Boyd National park after we finish at Jenolan.

cheers

My only problem at the moment is my tires but from the side tracks i did wasnt to bad with stock tires managed to climb a bit with them .
I also have a good map off the Caves to Caves ill scan the page and post it for you if you like.

Hi Ray, the range fire trail is very easy at the moment. How far up did you get? Around mt werong are some nice side tracks. I don't suppose u got to check the water levels at dingo dell or the kowmung river crossing?
Standard tyres should be fine for the main part of the trek provided its not wet.. Its only the side trails that may require more.

Re: Caves to Caves Winter Run

The range was rocky and full of potholes a few weeks back but nothing that would cause any damage a few weeks back. Do you have photos of the rocky sections? Would be interesting to see if it has changed.

Re: Caves to Caves Winter Run

4 Xtrails I reckon is enough to make this trip a goer. Do the you guys have a preferred date/day? Lets lock something in and hopefully that will get a few more people keen.

Re:

I'm am keen but not to sure how my standard xtrail will go, no bash plates and only road tyres, am planning on better tyres next time around, but thats awhile away.
Let me know if you think it's alright or only modified xtrails should go.
Peter.

Re: Caves to Caves Winter Run

Peter, you should be fine provided its dry along the main track. Last time we did it a triton came with us that had road tyres and never had any grip issues. We will just take it slow and steady. You wont be able to do the 2 little side trails (without damage) but you can jump in with me or one of the others for this section (will be less than 1 hour return). That's as long as you're OK leaving your car parked for a bit - i believe this is a problem for Jalal emoticon

If it's not dry I dare say the Kowmung will be impassable anyway.
