ongoing problem with T30 auto transmission - help welcome and needed!

Hello all. I currently have a 2006 STS Auto XTRAIL. She never missed a beat until May 2011. I was towing a small caravan (600kg)(but boxy- wind resistance) from Victoria to Brisbane. I started having transmission issues just prior to Sydney. To cut a long story short I was stranded - Nissan said they couldn't help me as they were flat out, so I took it to a private mechanic and he fitted a 2nd hand transmission (stated that it had done 78k). The vehicle had 104k on it at the time.

Since this transmission has been fitted, the vehicle has never performed quite right. When you approach a red traffic light you have to physically apply more brake pedal power to pull the car up, and when at the lights it feels like it wants to lurch forward. When you are travelling between 60kph - 80kph with very minimal accelerator input the vehicle constantly lurches between 3rd and 4th gear as if it cant make its mind up. Also fuel consumption has increased.

And coincidently (or not) the fuel gauge has started playing up and now we have to estimate our kilometres re fuel usage ( I have read the other threads on this).

The mechanic who installed the 2nd hand transmission had the vehicle for a month I will transcribe exactly what was written on the invoice.

"Vehicle came in with a flat spot and stumble @ 70-80kph under light throttle. Connect to diagnostic computer & check trouble codes, none found, reset ECU. Replace in tank EFI Fuel filter & spark plugs. Test ran & wasn't until hot the problem was reproduced & under live data on the scan tool nothing was evident. Vehicle sent to Nissan who had it for a week to diagnose. Eventually placing an oxygen sensor. Re flash computer program & re set idle air mix speeds add $30 fuel and further test ran no further problems......."

Well problem resurfaced the moment my father in law kindly drove our vehicle back to Queensland.

I have now taken the vehicle to an Auto transmission mechanic. In his opinion (he has rebuilt 1 (one) previous nissan xtrail transmission), He states that there are two models of Nissan Xtrail transmission for the T30. He summises that we may have the incorrect one installed.

I have since rang our local Nissan dealer. They state that there is only one model of transmission for the T30.

I have emailed Nissan to see if they could shed any further light, and they simply redirected me back to the local dealer (massive help they are!).

I have two questions for the Xtrail gurus out there.

1) Is there multiple models of the T30 auto transmission? and if not are there any variances within the same model?

2) Any help on diagnosing a possible solution who be warmly welcomed.

My auto transmission mechanic has suggested putting yet another transmission in, but I don't really want to fork out that sort of coin and possibly end up with the same problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Regards

Adam.

Re:

Hi Adam,

I failed to understand from your post why was the original auto transmission replaced in the first place and what was wrong with it. Why wasn't the original transmission re-conditioned?

Please note that I have NEVER come across a failed T30 automatic transmission and I have been across the T30 xtrail since they launched in 2001. Not a single case of total transmission failure came across me in that period, not unless the car was driven with no transmission oil in it anyway.

The description from the mechanic report all points to failed sensors, rather than a faulty transmission and all he needed to do is replace the CAM and CRANK sensors which are known to fail in the T30 models due to age.

Re: ongoing problem with T30 auto transmission - help welcome and needed!

Gday Jalal,

Thanks for replying. In relation to the first transmission, it felt like it started 'slipping' about 2 hours out of sydney. The next morning I continued my journey, and the engine light immediately illuminated. As I was 1000ks from home and had to get home that night so i could look after the kids the next day, I was in a predicament. I Took it to the first mechanic. I will transcribe what was on his invoice,
" Checked for codes and found PO733 3rd gear abnormal. checked auto oil condition and level. Oil smelt burnt. Changed auto oil. cleared codes and tested o.k'."

I drove out the driveway and then about 5 ks' down the road, the same problem reemerged (this time without towing anything (no load). The original mechanic did advise me that if the problem did return that I have broken or stretched one of the 'bands' (from my recollection), and that the prognosis is definitely not good.

Running out of time, as I now had a plane to catch, I limped the car to a mechanic that a friend of mine had recommended. A couple of days later He gave me three options.
1) second hand transmission
2) reconditioned 2nd hand transmission
3) rebuild the original transmission.

At the time, we formed the opinion that we were going to sell the xtrail as we realised that it wasn't suitable for towing. (hence the lowest cost option).

We have since purchased a larger 4wd and the xtrail is now the missus' vehicle. As I said, it has been a brilliant little car for us, apart from this incident we have had no problems.
*********************

Jalal, I really appreciate your feedback, and I can't turn back time, (the auto transmission mechanic here in brisbane also wishes that I still had my original transmission).

So should I look at replacing these two sensors and see what happens? what sort of dollars (ballpark) do you think I would be up for?

So re my Question 1, I am guessing from your reply that there is only (1) one model and variant of transmission for the T30?

Regards

Adam.

Hi Adam,

I really think this is pointing to when your last auto transmission fluid was changed, so you may need to go back to your service invoices and see when was that done to determine the problem. The error code description HERE gives a clear indication of the causes and it points to the transmission fluid overheating (probably the wrong transmission oil was used). It also refers to a whole heap of other ECU warnings you would get with it (these are explained HERE as well)

Am afraid that replacing the CAM and Crank sensors in this case will NOT solve your problem, but the malfunction of any of these 2 sensors would also cause lack of power and increased fuel consumption. In your case the problem is much larger and it is caused by either incorrect fitment of the replacement transmission (most likely) or a faulty 2nd hand transmission.

I have just confirmed this with Nissan and they told me that there is only one auto transmission for the T30 models.

If there are any problems with the second transmission why haven't you contacted the mechanic to have them repaired under his installation warranty ?
