Re:

1st gear take off as usual.
Change when you hear that the revs are right. 5th is a slight overdrive and 6th is just a fraction more with a ratio of about .800:1 and never ever tow in 6th gear unless on a flat frewway.

Re:

You can use 6th around town cause it's not a big overdrive.
Just listen to the engine, you'll know when to ghange up or down.

Re: Driving Technique with a 6 Speed Gearbox

I have just completed a trip from Adelaide to Robe. I found that 6th gear is great for cruising when I set up to overtake a vehicle I dropped into 5th until a suitable stretch of road then accelerated the xtrail responds well and is very swift to 140 from 110 kph. Slotted back into 6th hit the cruise button and settled back to 110kph.
I was a little worried about cruise and a manual gearbox however the engine is very flexible and handles it well.
You have made a good choice.

Re: Driving Technique with a 6 Speed Gearbox

Is your's a diesel or petrol ?

Mine is a diesel and optimal torque is between 1500 and 2200prm - I find I keep the gearchanges in this band (typically around 2000 rpm) and get good overall acceleration etc.

Hi Jalal

"A T31 with 6 speed auto transmission is only available in the diesel"

So which is it - manual or auto - mine is a 6spd man diesel or am I missing something in the original question?

Cheers

Re:

Neil's is a 6 speed manual petrol I believe.

Neil mate, it would make it easier for everyone to answer your questions if you include the year model and xtrail type in your signature.
