Wrong Diff Oil = Blown Rear Diff! :-S LOOKING FOR WRECKERS

Hey Guys,

Anyone know any good wreckers around Newcastle/Sydney area... I need a new rear diff.

I serviced my vehical as usual, however, used EPX 80W 90 gear oil instead of GL5 80W 90 oil.

everything was fine on the road (in 'AUTO' mode) but when i switched it to '4WD LOCK' mode while up on the beach for an hour or 2 it didnt like it.

My brother in law mechanic said its definately the rear diff, and definately the oil that did it.

Hi Keiron,

Send me a PM and I will give you names of a couple of good wreckers in Sydney which stock plenty of xtrail parts. I bought a diff for my T30 from one of them and it cost me $400 bucks compared to $4,500 which is the Nissan price!

Re:

reading the back of the Manual EPX 80-90w diff oil it states that is " most commonly recommended extreme pressure multipurpose gearbox and diff lubricant where SAE80-90 or 90 API classification GL5 type oil is recommended" which is exactly what the owners manual recommends. I've been on quite few serious 4WD expeditions and had it in lock the whole time and never come across a fault so far. So i doubt it is the oil

Re: Wrong Diff Oil = Blown Rear Diff! :-S LOOKING FOR WRECKERS

OMG OMG.... Ive used EPX 80w-90 in my Diffs and transer but havent selected another mode yet... Strange tho because thats what the Castrol Book says to use as i dont have the Manual anymore.. I reckon Ill keep it in as I dont use the offroad settings anyways.

Maybe it failed cause it took a knock, low oil or sand got in the seals.
Id drop the oil and see and if not pull the diff apart and clean it to find the cause and give it the once over before replacing.

Good Luck.

Re:

after giving castrol a call the person on the phone quoted that the oil mentioned is with in all standards associated with GL5 classification and by all means would not be the cause of a failure as it meets this standard. On a side note before i replaced the oils there was a whining noise coming from the rear when in auto or lock and now since changing the oil it has gone away. although there was only one previous owner (a female) it may of never of been put on lock mode.
