Diesel Automatic and Torque

Hello All,

Love the forum and it looks to be full of interesting things.

I have been reading about the T31 Diesel engine and automatic gearbox in this forum and elsewhere but cannot locate an answer to my question below after searching the forum for an answer.

When the Diesel Engine is matched to the automatic gearbox is detuned to 110kw and 320Nm so the gearbox can handle the torque.

My question is, can the gearbox handle additional torque if the engine is tuned back to the manual specs of 127kw and 360Nm.

If it cannot, what needs to be done to allow power increases?
Is it simply a transmission cooler upgrade or are bits likely to break?

Thanks from those more knowledgable than me.

Andrew

Re: Diesel Automatic and Torque

Hi Andrew,

The limitation is set at the ECU level and it can not be over-written.

You can however free up additional torque and horse power by doing N/A performance modifications on the car such as:

* Adding a diesel tuning CHIP
* Fitting a free flow exhaust system

The above additions your existing ECU will tolerate.

You can do a search on the above 2 performance mods for the diesel and you will find them covered in existing topics.

Re:

As far as i understand, the major limitation to putting extra power through the auto is that it can't handle the heat as well as a manual.

I put in a diesel chip, and the extra power doesn't worry me for a few reasons:
-The extra heat is only going to be a problem if you push your xtrail hard off road, or tow massive loads. IMHO, if you are doing things like that regularly, its probably time for a real 4wd.
-Assuming the gearbox can handle 110kw, you will only generate additional heat if you use more than 110kw. You shouldn't need to use full throttle off road that often anyway.
-If you are towing a heavy load, use a lower gear. The engine will rev higher, the gearbox will spin slower and generate less heat.

Again, just because you CAN produce more than 110kw, does't mean you need to do so all the time.

Re: Diesel Automatic and Torque

Thanks for the replies.

At the moment 110kw is plenty for me, my last 4WD was an old Hilux Surf with about 70kw and only 190Nm of torque.

I understand the heat issue, however if a manual gearbox (or diff/axles etc) isn't rated to cope with the torque of the engine normally things go bang.

Does the auto do the same?

I also agree with MrMez, if I need more power or more 4wd capability I'll get a real 4wd, although I think the x-trail will get me everywhere my old "real" 4wd got me in both more style and comfort.

Re:

I recently took the auto TS away with an unbraked camper trailer. No issues to speak off and was every bit as good as the gas falcon I had before it. Except the fuel economy, 9.8 lt / 100k wow that was outstanding. Especially when we were dragging it up and down some steep roads. Love the torque of the diesel, once it gets off the line that is.
